Themed list10 citiesUpdated November 2026

New Year's Eve, the ten cities that own the night.

Ten cities for the last night of the year, ranked on the fireworks, the place you watch them from and the party around them. Mapped, with what to book.

Every city sets off fireworks at midnight; few make the whole night worth the trip. We ranked these ten on the night itself: the fireworks and where a visitor can watch them, how the city celebrates beyond the countdown, and how easy it is to be out.

FAQ

Which city celebrates New Year first?+
Of the ten here, Auckland reaches midnight first, two hours before Sydney and 18 hours before New York. A few Pacific islands get there sooner, but Auckland is the first major city with a show.
Do I need a ticket to watch the fireworks?+
In London and Edinburgh, yes: both sell tickets for the central viewing areas and both sell out. Sydney's vantage points are mostly free, and Rio, Reykjavik, Valparaíso, Berlin, Dubai and Auckland are free to watch.
What do people wear on New Year's Eve in Rio?+
White, almost without exception. The custom comes from offerings to the sea goddess Iemanjá on Copacabana, and many people still leave white flowers in the surf and jump seven waves at midnight.
How early should I arrive for the big shows?+
Hours, not minutes. Sydney's foreshore and Times Square fill through the afternoon, and Downtown Dubai's roads close from 4pm. Bring food and water, since leaving usually means losing your place.
Can bad weather cancel New Year's Eve?+
It can. Edinburgh called off its 2024 street party in high winds, and Reykjavik cancels its bonfires when the wind is too strong. Rain rarely stops the fireworks themselves, so check the organiser's site on the day.
