Museum cities, from the Louvre in Paris to the Prado in Madrid (Wimup themed list)
Themed list10 citiesUpdated October 2026

Museum cities, ten worth the trip for the collections alone.

The 10 cities whose museums are reason enough to go, from the Louvre and the Prado to the Bruegels of Vienna, and the city guide that gets you there.

We ranked these ten on the collections a visitor can actually see in a few days, then on how well each city runs its museums for a visitor: opening hours, booking and price. That second test is why free London sits second and Berlin, with the Pergamon shut, sits ninth.

FAQ

Which city has the best museums in the world?+
Paris ranks first here: the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay are the strongest pair of museums in any one city, and both are walkable from the centre. London is a close second and wins on price, because its national museums are free.
Which museum cities are cheapest to visit?+
London, where the British Museum, the National Gallery, Tate Modern and the V&A have been free since 2001. The Prado is free for its last two hours each day, and the Vatican Museums on the last Sunday of the month.
Do I need to book museum tickets in advance?+
Often, yes. The Van Gogh Museum sells only online tickets with a start time, the Galleria Borghese admits booked visitors only, and the Uffizi and the Accademia sell out in season.
Are any major museums closed for renovation?+
Two on this list. The Centre Pompidou in Paris closed in 2025 for works due to finish in 2030, and the Pergamonmuseum in Berlin is due to reopen in part on 4 June 2027, with the Ishtar Gate wing later.
How many days does a museum city need?+
Three days covers the flagships of Paris, London or New York at one major museum a day, which is about as much as anyone takes in. Madrid, Amsterdam and Florence fit their essentials into two.
