Quick answer

Give the capital a morning: the market on Market Street, the national museum in the old courthouse, the cathedral on the hill and lunch on Redcliffe Quay. Swim at Fort James or Dickenson Bay in the afternoon. Spend a full day at Nelson's Dockyard and stay on a Sunday for the Shirley Heights party, then save a day for Betty's Hope and Devil's Bridge.

St. John's is a small harbour capital and the island's hub. The old town climbs from the cruise piers to a twin-towered cathedral, the beaches start ten minutes out, and the Georgian dockyard at English Harbour sits across the island on the south coast.

The 10 best things to do in St. John's

1

Nelson's Dockyard National Park

Landmark· Dockyard Drive, English Harbour

The only Georgian naval dockyard still working anywhere, and a UNESCO site since 2016. Its stone storehouses now hold hotels, bars and yacht crews. Start at the Dockyard Museum in the old Admiral's House, then walk the quay.

St. John's travel FAQ

How many days do you need in St. John's?+
One day covers the capital: market, museum, cathedral and Redcliffe Quay. Give the island three days in all, with one at English Harbour and Shirley Heights and one for Betty's Hope and Devil's Bridge. Add a day for Barbuda.
When is the best time to visit Antigua?+
The dry season runs from mid-December to mid-April, the most reliable and most expensive stretch. Late April brings the sailing regattas. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk from mid-August to mid-October.
How do you get from the airport to St. John's?+
V.C. Bird International is about 8 km northeast of town, a short taxi ride. Fares follow government-set zones and are not metered, so agree the price, and whether it is in US or EC dollars, before you set off.
Do you need a car in Antigua?+
Not for the capital or Dickenson Bay. For the south coast and the east it helps. Traffic keeps left, and every visiting driver must buy a temporary local permit from a rental desk or a police station.
What is the Shirley Heights party?+
A Sunday barbecue at the lookout above English Harbour, with a steel band from late afternoon and a reggae band after dark. It is the best-attended night on the island, so plan the ride back before you go.
