Quick answer

The best things to do in Prizren are the climb to the fortress for the view over the minarets, Sinan Pasha Mosque, the Stone Bridge and the evening walk round Shadërvan, the League of Prizren house where the 1878 assembly met, and the frescoes of Our Lady of Ljeviš. Two days covers the town; a third reaches Dečani or the Sharr Mountains.

Prizren is the Ottoman town Kosovo kept: a river crossed by a stone bridge, domes and minarets on both banks, and a fortress on the hill behind. It is compact enough to cross on foot, and in August DokuFest fills it with film.

The 10 best things to do in Prizren

1

Climb to the fortress at sunset

Landmark· Kalaja, above Nenkalaja, Prizren

The walls on the hill have been rebuilt by Byzantines, Serbian kings and Ottomans, and most of what stands is Ottoman. The reason to climb is the view: the whole old town, its minarets and the river laid out below. Go up for the last hour of light.

Best atThe hour before sunset
TipThe path is steep cobbles and loose stone. Wear shoes with grip and carry water in summer.
2

Stand under the dome of Sinan Pasha Mosque

Mosque· Shadërvan, Prizren

Completed in 1615 for Sofi Sinan Pasha, a native of the town, its single minaret and great dome own the skyline above the river. A 1915 bomb wrecked the portico; a restoration from 2007 returned it to worship in 2011.

3

Cross the Stone Bridge

Landmark· Ura e Gurit, Prizren

Three stone arches over the Lumbardhi, the middle one highest, joining Shadërvan to Saraçhane. The flood of November 1979 took the old bridge away entirely, and the copy you walk over today opened on 17 November 1982.

4

Join the evening walk round Shadërvan

Square· Sheshi Shadërvan, Prizren

The cobbled square around the old fountain is the town's living room. On summer nights, from about half past nine until midnight, the streets around it fill with families walking the corso. Local lore says a drink from the fountain brings you back.

5

See where the League of Prizren met

Museum· Lidhja e Prizrenit, by the Lumbardhi, Prizren

On 10 June 1878 Albanian delegates assembled here to found the League of Prizren. Yugoslav police destroyed the complex in March 1999 and it was rebuilt by 2005. Today it holds the League's documents and an ethnographic collection of costume.

6

Ask to see the frescoes of Our Lady of Ljeviš

Church· Old town, Prizren

King Milutin rebuilt this church in 1306 and 1307, and the Astrapas painters covered it in frescoes that earned it UNESCO listing in 2006. It was burned in 2004 and is now kept locked behind wire under police watch.

7

Walk the gorge to the Holy Archangels

Monastery· Bistrica gorge, 2.5 km from Prizren

Stefan Dušan founded this monastery between 1343 and 1352 as his own burial church, and excavators found his tomb in the ruins. Burned in 2004, it now sits in a protected zone with one resident priest. The walk up the river is the reward.

8

Go inside the 1498 hammam, now a museum

Museum· Old town, by the Lumbardhi, Prizren

The Archaeological Museum fills a bathhouse of 1498 under seven lead-roofed domes. More than 800 finds from Prizren, Dragash, Rahovec and Suhareka run from antiquity to the nineteenth century. The building is half the reason.

TipPair it with the League complex nearby: one covers the town before the Ottomans
9

Watch filigree being made

Craft· Filigran workshop, by the Lumbardhi, Prizren

Prizren has twisted silver wire into lace since at least the fifteenth century. Former workers of the state firm, founded in 1947, restarted it in 2006 and now work in a municipal workshop on the river. Buy from the bench.

Drive out to Visoki Dečani

Monastery· Deçan, about 60 km northwest of Prizren

The largest medieval church in the Balkans holds one of the great fresco cycles of the fourteenth century, and it is UNESCO-listed as part of the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo. Italian KFOR troops still guard the gate.

Prizren travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Prizren?+
Two. The first covers the old town on foot: Shadërvan, Sinan Pasha Mosque, the Stone Bridge, the League house and the climb to the fortress at sunset. The second goes up the gorge to the Holy Archangels or out to Dečani. Add a third for the Sharr Mountains.
When is the best time to visit Prizren?+
May, June and September give warm days without the heat of July, when highs average around 29°C. Early August brings DokuFest and the town is at capacity. Winters are cold and snowy, with January lows below freezing.
How do you get to Prizren?+
Fly to Pristina, about an hour away by road, and take a transfer or a bus through Pristina. Tirana airport is 162 km away, about two and a half hours by bus. There is no passenger train to Prizren.
Can you visit Our Lady of Ljeviš?+
Yes, but not by walking in. The church is locked behind wire and watched by Kosovo Police. Visitors report being let in by a caretaker after leaving an original passport at the police post opposite. There is no published schedule, so allow time.
What currency is used in Prizren?+
The euro, although Kosovo is not in the EU. Prices are among the lowest in Europe: a plate of qebapa with salad and yoghurt costs a few euros, and some grills, Te Syla among them, take cash only, so carry notes.
