The church is a compact cross-in-square with a dome, built before 1447, its brickwork patterned in the Byzantine manner. Ohrid was the capital of Tsar Samuel's state at the turn of the eleventh century, and the wall around the crown of the hill is what is left of it. The circuit was restored in 2003, so you can walk long stretches of rampart. There is not much inside the walls, which is the point: the interest is entirely in the vantage.

See where Slavonic was taught, at Plaošnik

Historic site· Plaošnik, 6000 Ohrid

Two hundred and fifty metres below the fortress, Clement of Ohrid founded a monastery and a school in the late ninth century and taught in Slavonic rather than Greek. What you see is layered: the church rebuilt in 2002 on Clement's own foundations, with the floors of a fifth-century basilica around it. Excavation continues.

Sit in the Hellenistic theatre

Built around the second century BC, buried, forgotten, and found by accident in 1977 when a house was going up on the slope. Only the lower rows survive, hemmed in by the old town, which is what makes it strange to stand in. It is a working venue again each summer, with the Ohrid Summer Festival staging plays here.

Find the eleventh-century frescoes in St Sophia

The cathedral of the Ohrid archbishopric, and the most important medieval building in the country. The eleventh-century painting in the sanctuary and narthex is preserved in full, which is rare anywhere in the Byzantine world: the church spent the Ottoman centuries as a mosque, and the plaster that hid it is why it survives.

Take the lake down to Sveti Naum

Naum, Clement's contemporary, founded this monastery around 905 at the far southern end of the lake, a few hundred metres from the Albanian border. The present church is a sixteenth-century rebuild with Naum's tomb inside. Behind it the springs of the Crn Drim rise out of the ground in dozens of vents, cold and clear.

Follow the boardwalk under the cliffs

Walk· Kosta Abraš to Kaneo, 6000 Ohrid

A wooden walkway runs along the foot of the cliffs from the old harbour round to Kaneo, threading between rock and water the whole way. It is the best twenty minutes in Ohrid and costs nothing. Parts have no railing and the planks are slick after rain, so it wants attention rather than flip-flops.

Cross to the Bay of Bones

About eighteen kilometres down the eastern shore, a whole village has been rebuilt on a platform over the water: reed-roofed huts on wooden piles, reconstructing a settlement of roughly 1200 to 700 BC. It is not a guess. Divers found the original piles, and the museum shows what came up. A Roman fort sits on the hill behind.

A small room next to Sveta Bogorodica Perivlepta holds 37 icons, six of them painted on both sides, running from the eleventh century to the nineteenth. Curators rank the Ohrid collection alongside Sinai and Athos, which is a large claim for a gallery you can cross in fifteen paces. Go slowly.

Drive the Galičica ridge for both lakes at once

The mountain between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa is a national park, and the road over it climbs in hairpins to a saddle where both lakes are in view at once. They do not look alike: Ohrid is deep teal, Prespa shallower, greener and higher, and the two are connected underground through the limestone.

How many days do you need in Ohrid?+
Three. The first covers the old town on foot: Sveta Sofija, the theatre, Plaošnik, the fortress wall and the cliff path to Kaneo. The second goes down the eastern shore to the Bay of Bones and Sveti Naum. The third is the Galičica ridge or a day on a beach. Two days works if you skip the lake road.
When is the best time to visit Ohrid?+
June and September. Both give warm days, a swimmable lake and an old town you can walk without queueing. July and August have the warmest water and the whole festival calendar, but the town is at capacity. Between November and March a good deal closes, and the boats to Sveti Naum do not run.
How do you get to Ohrid?+
Ohrid St Paul the Apostle Airport is nine kilometres from town, but it is seasonal, with far more flights in summer. The alternative is flying to Skopje and taking a bus, which runs in about three hours. There is no passenger train to Ohrid, so every land route is a road route.
Can you swim in Lake Ohrid?+
Yes, and it is one of the reasons to come. The lake is spring-fed rather than river-fed, so the water is clear enough to see the bottom well out from shore. It warms to roughly 23°C in August. Kaneo and Potpesh are the swims within walking distance; Gradište is worth the bus.
What is Ohrid known for?+
Three things. The lake, one of the oldest on Earth and holding more than 200 species found nowhere else. The churches, enough that the town is called the Jerusalem of the Balkans. And Plaošnik, where Clement taught Slavonic literacy from the late ninth century. UNESCO lists the natural and cultural heritage together.
