Quick answer

Give Cluj-Napoca two days. The first belongs to the centre on foot: Piața Unirii and St Michael's Church, the Art Museum in the Bánffy Palace, the history museum and the climb up Cetățuia at sunset. The second splits between the Botanical Garden and the open-air museum on Hoia hill. Add a morning for Salina Turda, about 30 km south-east.

Cluj-Napoca is Transylvania's largest city and its university town, with more than 40,000 students at Babeș-Bolyai alone. The old centre is Habsburg and Hungarian in its stone, Romanian in its daily life, and small enough to cross on foot.
