Two days. Day one is the centre on foot: the Reformed Great Church and its tower, the Reformed College library next door, and Munkácsy's Christ trilogy at the Déri Museum across the square. Day two is the Nagyerdő, the forest at the end of tram 1, where the thermal water, the zoo and the botanical garden sit within a few minutes of each other. Add a third day for the Hortobágy puszta.

Debrecen is the Calvinist Rome, and it has twice been the country's capital in an emergency. Kossuth read the dethronement of the Habsburgs from the Great Church in April 1849, and a provisional government formed here in December 1944. Hungary's second city grew up around that one building.

The Reformed Great Church

The building the city is arranged around, and the reason Debrecen is called the Calvinist Rome. Neoclassical, finished in 1824, 1,500 square metres of floor, and the room where Kossuth read the dethronement of the Habsburgs in April 1849. Take the tower ticket: the climb to the bells is the point.

The Déri Museum

Eastern Hungary's most important museum, and the permanent home of Munkácsy's Christ trilogy: Christ before Pilate, Golgotha and Ecce Homo, hung together in one room. All three have been Hungarian state property since 2019. The rest came from Frigyes Déri's 1920 bequest.

The Reformed College of Debrecen

The school of the nation, next door to the Great Church. A frescoed staircase climbs to the Oratory, where the 1849 assembly sat, and on to the Great Library. Adult entry is 800 forints, which buys more history per forint than anything else in the city.

Hortobágy National Park

The puszta: 820 square kilometres of grassland, grey cattle, racka sheep and horse herds, on the UNESCO list since 1999 and Hungary's first national park. The Nine-arch Bridge, 167 metres of it, stands at the village edge on Route 33. About 40 km west.

Nagyerdei Kultúrpark

The Nagyerdei Water Tower

A 1913 water tower rebuilt in 2015 into a viewing deck, a bar and the city's tourist information point. It is the one place in Debrecen where you look down on the Great Forest canopy rather than up into it.

St Anne's Cathedral

The Catholic answer in a Calvinist city. Giovanni Battista Carlone built it in 1721 for Cardinal Imre Csáky and it was dedicated to St Anne in 1746. Fire took both towers in 1811 and Ferenc Povolny rebuilt them in 1834. A cathedral since 1993.

The Csokonai National Theatre

Debrecen's national theatre, a few steps off Kossuth tér and named for the poet Mihály Csokonai Vitéz. In summer the company moves out to the open-air stage in the Great Forest, which is the better ticket if the weather holds.

How do you get to Debrecen from Budapest?+
By train. Direct services leave Budapest Nyugati roughly every couple of hours for Debrecen Nagyállomás and take about three hours. Debrecen International Airport takes flights from Munich, London Luton and Varna, but the route list is short, so most visitors arrive through Budapest.
What is Debrecen famous for?+
Calvinism and two emergencies. It is the centre of the Hungarian Reformed Church, which is why it is called the Calvinist Rome, and it has been the country's capital twice: in 1849, when Kossuth read the dethronement of the Habsburgs, and again from December 1944.
Is Debrecen worth visiting?+
Yes, for two days. Hungary's second city does not try to be Budapest: one great church, one great museum, a forest with thermal water in it, and the puszta forty kilometres west. Prices sit well below the capital's.
When is the best time to visit Debrecen?+
May, June and September. July and August bring the Campus Festival, the Wine and Jazz Days and the Flower Carnival, the busiest week of the year and worth planning around either way. Late November brings the Advent market to Kossuth tér.

Built 1719 to 1725, reworked in neo-Romanesque in 1876. A windstorm took the onion dome in 1907 and nobody put it back, hence the local name: the truncated church.
