Give Brasov two days. The first is the walled city on foot: Piata Sfatului and the Black Church, Rope Street, Catherine's Gate, then the cable car or the Serpentine path up Tampa for the view back down. The second belongs to the Schei quarter and the First Romanian School, or to the road south, where Bran and Rasnov sit 30 km away on the same run. Add a third for Peles at Sinaia.
Brasov is the Saxon city the Carpathians close around. German settlers walled a trading post below Tampa in the 13th century and ran the crossing between Transylvania and Wallachia from it for six hundred years. What survives is a Gothic hall church, a ring of guild towers, and a mountain 400 metres above the square.
A marketplace since 1364 and still the room Brasov holds everything in: the Christmas market, the marathon start, the terraces. Pastel merchant houses run the full rectangle and Tampa closes the south end, which is why the square photographs the way it does. Come in the hour before dark.
The largest Gothic church in the region, begun in the 14th century and named for the fire of 1689 that blackened its walls. Two things inside are worth the ticket on their own: a collection of Anatolian carpets left by merchant guilds, and an organ of nearly 4,000 pipes still played in concert.
The mountain the city is built against, 960 metres up and close to 400 above the rooftops. A cable car runs from Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu; the Drumul Serpentinelor path climbs the same face in switchbacks for anyone who would rather walk. The Hollywood-style BRAȘOV sign sits just below the summit.
The Council House has stood in the middle of the square since 1420 and now holds the Brasov County Museum of History. Above it is the Trumpeter's Tower, 58 metres, raised between 1525 and 1528 to sound the alarm. The guild history inside is the context every other stop in the old town needs.
Eighty metres long and between 111 and 135 centimetres wide, the narrowest street in Romania and one of the narrowest in Europe. It began as a fire corridor between two blocks of the old town and takes about a minute to walk. Go early: it holds roughly one photograph at a time.
Built in 1559 and the only medieval city gate in Brasov still standing, its central tower the original work. The four corner turrets were the Saxon council's sign that it could pass a death sentence. It marks the old boundary: Romanians lived beyond it, in Schei, and needed a toll to come inside.
In the yard of St Nicholas Church in Schei, the first school in the country to teach in Romanian, in a building dated 1495. Villages sent one child each to be trained as teacher, notary or priest. The rooms hold early printing from Deacon Coresi, who put the Romanian language into print here.
The country's best-known ski resort, 12 pistes on the Postavarul massif between 1,020 and 1,799 metres, and the Postavarul Express gondola up from the meadow. Drumul Rosu, the blue that winds off the top, runs over 5 km and is the longest piste in Romania. City bus 20 gets you there.
Brasov began walling itself in 1395 and by 1641 held 8 bastions and 28 towers, each kept by a guild. The Weavers' Bastion is the one that survived whole, four storeys of galleries around a courtyard. The After Walls promenade runs from it along the base of Tampa to the Graft.
Built between 1899 and 1901 to a design by Lipot Baumhorn, neo-Gothic with Moorish detail, and the least visited grand interior in Brasov. It went up after the city's Jewish community split in 1877 and each half built its own house of worship. Ten minutes from the square, past Catherine's Gate.
