Porvoo sits on the Porvoonjoki about 50 km east of Helsinki, a bilingual town (Borgå in Swedish) with a wooden Old Town rebuilt after the fire of 1760. Come for the riverside, the cathedral that hosted the Diet of 1809, and the pastry named after its poet.

Porvoo travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Porvoo?+
One full day covers the Old Town, the cathedral, the Old Town Hall museum and Runeberg's home. Stay a night to see the riverside after the day-trippers leave and to add Iso Linnamäki, Haikko or the urban park.
How do you get from Helsinki to Porvoo?+
Onnibus runs several times a day and takes 50 to 60 minutes. From May to September the M/S J. L. Runeberg steamship sails from Helsinki Market Square in about three and a half hours; take it out and the bus back.
Is Porvoo worth visiting in winter?+
Yes, with shorter days. Runeberg Day on 5 February and Porvoo Lights later that month give the dark months a reason, and the Art Factory's Christmas market fills December. Some restaurants cut their hours out of season, so check before you go.
Do people in Porvoo speak Swedish or Finnish?+
Both. About 63% of residents speak Finnish and 27% Swedish, and street signs carry both names (Porvoo is Borgå). English is widely spoken in shops, museums and restaurants.
What food is Porvoo known for?+
The Runeberg torte, an almond and rum cake with raspberry jam, tied to a Porvoo confectioner and eaten on 5 February. Brunberg, founded here in 1871, makes the town's chocolate kisses and truffles.
