The best things to do at Meteora are the six monasteries still in use, the sunset from Psaropetra, the old monks path up from Kastraki and the prehistoric cave at Theopetra. Two days covers all of it. Each monastery closes one day a week and the closed days shift between the summer and winter timetables, so check the current board before you fix a route.

Meteora is not a town but a rock forest above the Thessalian plain, and the six working monasteries on its summits are the reason to come. Kalambaka and Kastraki sit at its foot, close enough that the whole circuit is a two day trip and a car or a pair of boots is all the planning it needs.

Climb to the Great Meteoron

Monastery· Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration (Great Meteoron), Meteora 422 00

The oldest and largest of the six, founded around 1340 by Athanasios the Meteorite on a summit 613 metres up. The museum fills the old monastic rooms: the refectory, the kitchen under its blackened vault, the cooperage and the ossuary. It also has the longest stair on the circuit, so take it first.

See the net and windlass at Varlaam

Monastery· Holy Monastery of Varlaam, Meteora 422 00

Second largest, and a few minutes on foot across the saddle from the Great Meteoron. A hermit named Varlaam took the rock in the fourteenth century and the brothers Theophanes and Nektarios of Ioannina rebuilt it in 1541. The tower still holds the net and windlass that hauled up everything before the steps.

Cross the footbridges to Roussanou

The one on every photograph of Meteora, because its rock is lower than the rest and the building fits it exactly, wall to edge. Built in 1545 by Maximos and Ioasaph of Ioannina, dedicated to St Barbara and run by nuns. Two short footbridges cross from the road, so it is the least strenuous of the six.

Walk up to Holy Trinity

The one that stands alone on its pillar above Kalambaka, and the one that turns up in the 1981 Bond film For Your Eyes Only. There is no bridge: you drop into the gap and climb a stair cut through the rock, which keeps the numbers down and leaves the widest view on the circuit to whoever made the walk.

Find the Cretan frescoes at Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas

The first monastery on the road out of Kastraki and the smallest, stacked on a rock so narrow that each floor holds a single room. The chapel was painted in 1527 by Theophanes the Cretan, and those frescoes are the reason to stop rather than drive on to the two big houses above.

Take the level bridge to Agios Stefanos

The only one reached on the level, by a short bridge from the car park at the eastern end of the circuit, which makes it the realistic choice for anyone who cannot manage stairs. It has been a convent since 1961, and its balcony looks straight down over Kalambaka and the plain.

Watch the sunset from Psaropetra

A bare boulder platform on the monastery road with Roussanou below it and the pillars ranked behind, and the spot the whole valley converges on at dusk. It is small and it fills, so come forty minutes early or take the unmarked saddle between the Great Meteoron and Roussanou instead.

Walk the old monks path from Kastraki

Before the road was cut this was the way up, and on foot it still is: about seven kilometres and two hundred metres of climb from Kastraki, past the ruins of Pantokrator, to Varlaam and the Great Meteoron. Four to five hours with the monastery stops built in.

Base yourself in Kastraki

How many days do you need at Meteora?+
Two. One for the circuit road and as many monasteries as the closing days allow, one for a path on foot and the Theopetra cave. A single day gets you four monasteries through a bus window and none of the quiet.
What is the dress code for the monasteries?+
Men need long trousers, women a skirt below the knee, and both need shoulders covered. Sleeveless tops are turned away. Wrap around skirts hang at each entrance for anyone who arrives without one, so this stops nobody who did not know.
Can you visit all six monasteries in one day?+
Rarely. Each closes one day a week, the closed days differ between the summer and winter timetables, and gates shut in the early afternoon. Check the current board first. There is no combined ticket: every monastery takes its own fee, in cash, at its own gate.
How do you get to Meteora from Athens?+
By road it is about four hours to Kalambaka. The rail branch from Palaiofarsalos has been closed since the 2023 Thessaly floods, so trains run to Palaiofarsalos and a connecting coach finishes the journey. KTEL coaches also run through Trikala.
Do you need a car at Meteora?+
It helps and it is not required. A local bus climbs from Kalambaka to the monasteries several times a day, taxis wait on the square, and the old monks paths link the six on foot, which is the better way to see them anyway.

  • Twenty four monasteries stood on these pillars in the sixteenth century. Six are still in use.
  • The rock is conglomerate: a river delta laid down over millions of years, cemented, then cut into towers.
  • UNESCO listed Meteora in 1988 as a mixed site, for the monasteries and for the landscape they sit on.
  • Before steps were cut into the rock, some monasteries were reached only by rope ladder or a net on a windlass.
