Quick answer

The best things to do in Maputo are the Central Railway Station and Mercado Central in the Baixa, the Fortaleza, a walking tour of Mafalala, lunch at the Mercado do Peixe and the view from the KaTembe bridge. Two or three days covers the city; add one for Inhaca or Maputo National Park. May to September is the dry, mild window.

Maputo is a low colonial grid on a cliff above its bay, Portuguese in its avenues and revolutionary in their names: Mao Tse Tung, Kim Il Sung, Ho Chi Min. It rewards walking the Baixa by day, eating prawns by the kilo, and staying out late for the music.

1

Stand under the dome at the Central Railway Station

Landmark· Praça dos Trabalhadores, Baixa, Maputo

The Beaux-Arts station opened in 1910 and was finished in 1916, its green dome and ironwork the grandest front in the city. Gustave Eiffel had nothing to do with it, whatever the story says. Walk the platforms, then the gallery inside.

Maputo travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Maputo?+
Two or three. One for the Baixa (station, market, fort, Praça da Independência), one for Polana, the Natural History Museum and a long lunch at the fish market, and a third for Mafalala or a crossing to KaTembe. Add a day for Inhaca or Maputo National Park.
Is Maputo safe for visitors?+
By day, with ordinary care, yes. Petty theft and phone snatching are the real risks. Keep valuables out of sight, take a Yango or a registered taxi after dark, and read your government's current advice. The Cabo Delgado insurgency is at the far northern end of the country.
When is the best time to visit Maputo?+
May to September. The dry season brings mild days around 26°C and cool nights. November to March is hot, humid and wet, with January the rainiest month, and the cyclone window runs from January to March.
How do you get from Maputo to Ponta do Ouro?+
By road over the KaTembe bridge, about 120 km and under two hours on the paved road south. The same road passes the turn for Maputo National Park. A hire car gives you both in one trip.
Do you need cash in Maputo?+
Yes. Cards work in hotels, supermarkets and the better restaurants, but chapas, markets, the fish market kitchens and small bars are cash businesses in meticais. Draw from a bank ATM and carry small notes.
