The best things to do in Maseru are the mountain fortress of Thaba Bosiu, shopping for a mokorotlo at the Basotho Hat, the Morija Museum, the Ha Kome cave houses and the mohair weavers of Teyateyaneng. With a car, add the God Help Me Pass and the 204 m abseil at Maletsunyane Falls. Three or four days covers it; April to May and September to October are dry and mild.
Maseru is a low-rise capital on the Caledon river, a border bridge away from South Africa, and most of the town is offices, malls and taxi ranks. Give it a morning. The reason to stay is the kingdom behind it: Thaba Bosiu, Morija and the passes to the highlands.

TY is the weaving capital of Lesotho. Setsoto Design and Helang Basali, at the St Agnes Mission, spin, dye and weave local mohair into tapestries of village life, and you can watch every stage.
The A3 climbs out of the lowlands over Bushman's Pass at 2,266 m and Molimo Nthuse at 2,318 m, on tar the whole way. It is the quickest way to see what the Kingdom in the Sky means.
A rock shelter above the Liphiring river painted by San hunter-gatherers with eland, leopards and hunting and dancing scenes. Vandalism has faded some panels, and it is still the easiest rock art to reach from the capital.
The road in drops over the Gates of Paradise Pass to a village lodge known for its pony treks. Day rides and overnight treks reach waterfalls and villages no vehicle does.
The seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Maseru, completed in 1955 to a design by the South African architect Eduard Payens. It anchors the Kingsway walk that ends at the Basotho Hat.
