Quick answer

Give Liberec two days. Spend the first in town: the town hall tour and its tower, the Regional Gallery in the old baths, the North Bohemian Museum, then tram 2 to the zoo and the botanic garden. Give the second to the mountains: tram 3 and the seasonal bus up to the Ještěd tower, or bus 18 to Bedřichov for the Jizera trails. A third day buys Jablonec or Frýdlant Castle.

Liberec is the capital of north Bohemia, a former textile city of about 108,000 people an hour from Prague by bus. The Ještěd ridge rises straight behind it, the Jizera Mountains start at the edge of town, and Germany and Poland are both within 30 km.

Liberec travel FAQ

Is Liberec worth a trip from Prague?+
Yes, for two days or a long day. The bus from Černý Most takes about an hour, and Liberec adds what Prague lacks: the Ještěd tower, a ski and hiking network at the edge of town, and a compact centre with a fine gallery and museum.
How do I get up Ještěd while the cable car is closed?+
Take tram 3 to Horní Hanychov. From there seasonal bus 79 runs to the Ještědka car park, about 750 m below the summit, or walk the 3.4 km blue trail. The Skalka chairlift runs on set days. A new cable car is planned for about 2029.
When is the best time to visit Liberec?+
January to March for cross-country skiing in the Jizera Mountains, including the Jizerská 50 in February. June and September for hiking, with castles and bus 79 running. Late November to 23 December brings the Advent market on the square.
How many days do I need in Liberec?+
Two days covers the town and one mountain: the town hall, gallery, museum and zoo on the first, Ještěd or Bedřichov on the second. Add a third for Jablonec, Frýdlant Castle or the Bohemian Paradise.
How do I get around Liberec?+
On foot in the centre, and by DPMLJ trams and buses beyond it. Tram 2 goes to the zoo and botanic garden, tram 3 to Horní Hanychov for Ještěd, and bus 18 to Bedřichov for the Jizera trails.
