Quick answer

The best things to do in Karlovy Vary are the Vřídlo geyser in the Hot Spring Colonnade, the Mill and Market colonnades, the Diana funicular and lookout, the Becherovka museum and the Moser glassworks. Two days covers the spa valley on foot. A third buys Loket Castle or the Singing Fountain at Mariánské Lázně.

Karlovy Vary is the spa town Charles IV founded in the fourteenth century, laid along the narrow valley of the Teplá. You drink the hot springs from a spouted cup under five colonnades, then ride a funicular into the forest above the rooftops.

The 10 best things to do in Karlovy Vary

1

Watch the Vřídlo geyser erupt

Spring· Vřídelní kolonáda, 360 01 Karlovy Vary

The town’s reason for being. The Hot Spring shoots up to 12 metres inside its own glass pavilion at 73 °C, and the 1975 colonnade around it cools the water for the drinking bowls. Fill a spa cup and sip slowly; it tastes of salt.

Karlovy Vary travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Karlovy Vary?+
Two. The first covers the colonnades, the Hot Spring and the Diana funicular on foot. The second fits the Becherovka museum, Moser and a swim at Elizabeth Spa or the Hotel Thermal pool. A third buys Loket or Mariánské Lázně.
How do I get from Prague to Karlovy Vary?+
By coach. RegioJet and FlixBus run from Prague and from the airport’s Terminal 1 in under two hours, ending at the Tržnice stop by the spa zone. Trains take over three hours with a change, so they suit only rail fans.
Can you drink the spring water in Karlovy Vary?+
Yes. Each spring has its own temperature and mineral content, and they are drunk warm from a spouted spa cup sold at the colonnade stalls. Start with small sips: the water is salty and works on the digestion.
When is the Karlovy Vary film festival?+
Early July. The 60th edition ran from 3 to 11 July 2026, with Grandhotel Pupp and Hotel Thermal at its centre. Rooms fill months ahead and prices rise sharply that week, so book early or come another time.
Can you visit a spa in Karlovy Vary without staying at a spa hotel?+
Yes. Elizabeth Spa sells day pool passes, baths and massages to anyone, and the outdoor thermal pool at Hotel Thermal is open to the public with a ticket. Book treatments a few days ahead.
