Two days. One for the two squares, where the UNESCO Holy Trinity Column, the socialist realist astronomical clock and four of the six Baroque fountains stand within five minutes of each other. One for Wenceslas Hill, where the cathedral and the Archdiocesan Museum share a courtyard. Everything else is a tram ride.
Olomouc is a city of 105,297 people that was a capital of Moravia until the Thirty Years' War handed the role to Brno. It kept the archbishop, the second oldest university in the Czech lands and a UNESCO column, and lost the crowds to Prague.
The largest Baroque sculptural group in the country, 35 m of it, UNESCO-listed since 2000 and consecrated in 1754 with Maria Theresa standing in the square. There is a chapel inside the base. Come after dark, when it is lit and the square has emptied.
One of the few heliocentric clocks anywhere, and the only one whose saints were replaced by chemists, athletes and blacksmiths. A shell wrecked it in 1945 and Karel Svolinský rebuilt it in 1955 in socialist realism. The figures move at noon.
The south tower runs to 100.65 m, the tallest church tower in Moravia and the second tallest in the country. The cathedral was founded in 1107 and refaced in neo-Gothic between 1883 and 1892. The Romanesque palace beside it is the older story.
Twelfth to eighteenth century art in the chapter deanery, built around the Romanesque bishops palace and the Chapel of Saint Barbara. It opened in 2006 and is the reason to climb the hill even if churches are not your subject. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Late Gothic, three naves, and the reason to step in is the Engler organ of 1745: 8,012 pipes and the largest instrument in Central Europe. The south tower, the oldest part of the building, doubles as the old town lookout.
Six fountains on Roman gods, kept when other Czech towns broke theirs up for plumbing. Neptune, on the lower square, is the oldest at 1683. Caesar carries the city founding myth. Ivan Theimer added a seventh, Arion and its turtle, in 2002.
The other half of the Olomouc Museum of Art, and the one that programmes twentieth and twenty-first century work across several floors on Denisova. It hosts part of the Academia Film Olomouc festival each spring.
Five kilometres northeast and a long climb up, a Baroque pilgrimage church that John Paul II raised to a minor basilica, and beside it a zoo of more than 40 hectares with a lookout tower over the forest. A city bus does the hill in about twenty minutes.
Palacký University put its science centre in a nineteenth century artillery warehouse inside the Crown Fortress. Four permanent exhibitions (water, the brain, light and dark, and local history) and a digital planetarium. It opened in 2015.
The parks ring the old town along the line of the Baroque walls. Bezručovy sady holds the botanical garden, and the Rozárium grows more than a thousand rose varieties on 3.5 hectares that used to be the city tip. It took a World Federation of Rose Societies award in 2025.
