Quick answer

Two days. One for the two squares, where the UNESCO Holy Trinity Column, the socialist realist astronomical clock and four of the six Baroque fountains stand within five minutes of each other. One for Wenceslas Hill, where the cathedral and the Archdiocesan Museum share a courtyard. Everything else is a tram ride.

Olomouc is a city of 105,297 people that was a capital of Moravia until the Thirty Years' War handed the role to Brno. It kept the archbishop, the second oldest university in the Czech lands and a UNESCO column, and lost the crowds to Prague.

Olomouc travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Olomouc?+
Two. The first covers the two squares, the column, the clock and the fountains. The second takes Wenceslas Hill, the two art museums and either Svatý Kopeček or the ring parks. One day sees the squares and very little else.
Is Olomouc worth a day trip from Prague?+
It works. Fast trains run roughly hourly and take about two and a quarter hours, which leaves five or six hours here: the squares and one museum. A night buys you the old town at breakfast, when the students have it to themselves.
What is Olomouc famous for?+
The UNESCO Holy Trinity Column, a set of six Baroque fountains, a heliocentric astronomical clock rebuilt in socialist realism, and tvarůžky, the pungent curd cheese made 28 km away in Loštice.
When is the best time to visit Olomouc?+
Late April, when the Flora exhibition, the tvarůžky festival and Academia Film Olomouc land in the same fortnight. May and September are warm and quieter. The Christmas markets fill both squares from late November.
Is Olomouc walkable?+
Yes. The historic centre sits inside a ring of parks that replaced the Baroque walls, and nothing in it is more than a fifteen minute walk. Seven tram lines cover what lies outside, and a bus climbs to Svatý Kopeček.
