Two days covers Kristiansand. Give the first to the water: Bystranda in the middle of town, the 3.4 km loop around Odderøya, and Kunstsilo at the end of it. Keep the second for Dyreparken if you have children, or for Posebyen, Ravnedalen and the gun battery at Møvik if you do not. A third day buys Lindesnes lighthouse or the crossing to Denmark.
Kristiansand is Norway's summer coast rather than its fjord country, and it is a different holiday. The old town is a 1641 grid of white wooden houses, the beach sits in the middle of it, and the ferry to Denmark leaves from the quay. Sun is the local currency.
Southern Norway's biggest family attraction, and the reason most families come south at all. The zoo runs from Nordic wolves to a tropical hall, and Kardemomme By is the storybook town children recognise before they arrive. Book online; the gate queue in July is the slow part.
A converted grain silo on the Odderøya waterfront, open since May 2024. Inside is the Tangen collection: more than 5,500 works of Nordic modernism, the largest private holding of it anywhere. Two hours covers the art, and the building is half the visit.
The old town north of the market square: single-storey white wooden houses on a grid more than three centuries old, and the longest continuous wooden housing in northern Europe. An hour walks it. Posebyhaven, a backyard of cafes and small shops, is the stop in the middle.
A quarantine station, then a naval base, now the city's cultural island, five minutes on foot from the fish quay. The loop trail runs 3.4 km past wartime bunkers, the lighthouse and swimming rocks. Kilden and Kunstsilo sit at the near end, so the walk starts and finishes with something else.
A Blue Flag sand beach in the middle of the city, with a swimming pier, shallow water and the Aquarama waterpark behind it. The sea reaches about 16°C in July, which counts as warm in Norway. Palmesus takes the whole beach for a weekend in late June.
A wooded valley a kilometre from the centre, cut out by garrison soldiers in the 1870s and opened as a park in 1875. A pond, rhododendrons and magnolias, about 70 climbing routes on the cliffs, and a cafe at the bottom. Ravnedalen Live puts concerts in it for three days each July.
Møvik Fort, eight kilometres south, holds the only 38 cm Krupp gun left in the world: a 110 tonne barrel, close to twenty metres long, built to close the strait to Denmark. The tunnels and bunkers behind it are as interesting as the gun itself.
The round fort on the waterfront, finished in 1672 to guard the harbour from the sea. It is a short visit, free to walk around the outside, and it holds exhibitions and concerts through the summer. Bystranda begins on the other side of it.
The old fish wharf, rebuilt as a basin of restaurants and quay tables where local boats still tie up. Come for fish soup and fish cakes rather than the view alone, and pick the kitchen rather than the terrace. The Christmas lights are switched on here in mid-November.
The performing arts centre on the harbour, behind an oak wave of a facade. It houses the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Agder Teater and Opera Sør, so something is usually on. Check the programme before you book dinner, not after.

Sixteen kilometres northeast of the centre. AKT bus 35 covers it in about 30 minutes, roughly hourly, for 57 NOK on board or 34 NOK in the app.
The southern line runs Oslo to Stavanger through Kristiansand station, operated by Go-Ahead Nordic. Oslo takes about four and a half hours.
Both operators sail to Hirtshals from the quay. Color Line takes about 3 hours 15 minutes; Fjord Line's Fjord FSTR catamaran does it in 2 hours 25 from March to October.
