Three days covers Hobart. Give one to MONA and the ferry that gets you there, one to kunanyi and the tracks under the Organ Pipes, and one to the waterfront: Salamanca Market on a Saturday, the convict yards at Cascades, and dinner somewhere small. Everything else is a day trip, and Bruny Island and Port Arthur are the two worth the drive.
Hobart is a small city with an outsized amount going on. It sits between a 1,271 metre mountain and a deepwater harbour, has been a working port since 1804, and hosts the country's most provocative private museum in a suburb most visitors would drive past. You can walk from a Georgian warehouse to a ferry berth in twenty minutes.
David Walsh's private museum is cut three storeys into a sandstone peninsula on the Derwent, and the arrival is half of it: the camouflage-patterned ferry leaves Brooke Street Pier and drops you at the bottom of a long flight of steps. Inside there is no set route and almost no wall text, which is deliberate. Give it most of a day.
The summit road climbs to 1,271 metres in about half an hour from the city, and the temperature drops the whole way: snow can fall in any month. There is an enclosed observation shelter at the top for the days when standing outside is pointless, and boardwalks out to the edge for the days it is not. Check the road status before you set off, because it closes for ice.
Every Saturday since 1972, hundreds of stalls fill the sandstone strip along Salamanca Place: Tasmanian timber and wool, whisky, cheese, produce, and a fair amount of tourist filler you can walk straight past. The food end near Montpelier Retreat is the reason to arrive early. Treat it as the anchor of the day rather than a quick stop.
Hobart’s first residential quarter is still mostly Georgian and Victorian cottages on a headland above the docks, laid out tight enough that the streets read as lanes. Kelly’s Steps cut straight up from Salamanca Place and are the fastest way in. Arthur Circus, a ring of cottages around a green, is the set piece, and the whole loop takes under an hour.
Most of the buildings are gone, so what you walk through is yards, foundations and an outline rather than a restored interior, and that emptiness is what makes it land. This is where female convicts transported to Van Diemen's Land were held, punished and hired out. It is one of the Australian Convict Sites on the World Heritage List.
Founded in 1818 and still laid out around a convict-built brick wall that was heated from behind to ripen fruit in a climate that would not. The Subantarctic Plant House is the reason to come: a chilled, misted room that recreates Macquarie Island, cold enough to fog your camera. Entry is free, and the Derwent runs along the bottom of the slope.
The state museum occupies a block of Hobart's oldest buildings, including the early-1800s Commissariat Store, and covers Tasmanian Aboriginal culture, colonial art, natural history and the thylacine. Admission is free. The ningina tunapri gallery, developed with the Tasmanian Aboriginal community, is the part most visitors underestimate.
Australia’s oldest continuously operating brewery has been working at the foot of kunanyi since 1824, and the sandstone facade with the mountain rising behind it is the most photographed industrial building in the state. The tour walks the working brewhouse and finishes with tastings. The gardens and the bar justify the trip on their own if the tour is full.
Half an hour north of the city, Bonorong runs a rescue and rehabilitation operation alongside the sanctuary, so many of the animals in the enclosures are ones that cannot be released. Tasmanian devils, wombats, quolls and echidnas, with keeper talks included in admission. It is the most reliable way to see a devil doing anything other than sleeping.
Hobart is one of the world’s five Antarctic gateway cities, and this is a full-scale replica of the huts Douglas Mawson’s 1911 expedition built at Cape Denison, put up opposite Constitution Dock. It is one room, it takes half an hour, and it does more than any label to explain the icebreakers tied up further along the wharf.
