Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato
More than 100 naturally mummified bodies, disinterred from the municipal cemetery above the city from 1865 onward when families stopped paying the burial tax. Nothing was done to them: the dry, mineral-heavy ground and the thin air at 2,045 metres did the work, which is why the faces still carry expression. The museum sits on the cemetery esplanade in a purpose-built hall and is open every day of the year from 09:00 to 18:00. It is the single most visited thing in the city and it is not a novelty stop; the labelling is careful about who these people were.
