The best things to do in Aarhus are the rainbow walkway on the roof of ARoS, the 75 rebuilt houses of Den Gamle By, the Grauballe Man at Moesgaard, the twelfth-century cathedral on Store Torv and the wooden circle of the Infinite Bridge at Ballehage. Two days covers the centre comfortably. Add a third for Moesgaard, the beaches and the Marselisborg woods.

Aarhus is Denmark's second city, 378,000 people in the municipality on the east coast of Jutland, and the Vikings got here first: the settlement of Aros was already a town in the last quarter of the 8th century. Today 37,000 students give it the pace, and the centre is small enough to cross on foot.
Olafur Eliasson's Your Rainbow Panorama opened on the roof in 2011: a circular glass walkway 150 metres round and three metres wide, running through the full spectrum, so the city below changes colour as you go. Nine floors of Danish art sit under it, and Ron Mueck's five-metre Boy holds the basement.
Seventy-five historic buildings, lifted from twenty market towns across Denmark and rebuilt here as a working town. It opened in 1914, the first open-air museum anywhere devoted to urban rather than rural life. The 1974 quarter is the surprise: a hi-fi shop, a clinic and a hippie flat, all staffed in period.
Henning Larsen Architects sank the museum into a hillside in 2014 and grassed the roof, so the building doubles as the best picnic slope in the region. Inside is the Grauballe Man, a bog body found in 1952 and preserved down to his fingerprints. The prehistory galleries descend around him.
Aarhus Domkirke is the longest and tallest church in the country, 93 metres end to end and 96 metres to the top, begun in the twelfth century and dedicated to St Clement, the patron saint of sailors. The medieval frescoes were whitewashed after the Reformation and uncovered again centuries later.
Scandinavia's largest public library opened on 20 June 2015 and was named public library of the year soon after. Entry is free, the upper floor looks straight down the bay, and a tubular gong hangs in the atrium: parents at the city hospital press a button and it rings for every baby born.
The container terminal moved out and the architects moved in. Isbjerget is the block everyone photographs, four white slabs cut into peaks so that every flat keeps its water view. Walk the quay to the end and the open-air harbour bath sits there, free and busy right through the summer.
The oldest streets in the city, cobbled and half-timbered and laid out before the 1500s, now holding the independent shops, coffee bars and small kitchens. It runs to four or five blocks in total, which is the pleasure of it: cross it twice in an afternoon and still find a courtyard you missed.
Built between 1899 and 1902 as a national wedding gift to Christian X, and still the royal family's summer residence. The 13-hectare English-style garden, roses and sculpture included, opens to the public whenever the family is away. The deer park next door runs on into the Marselisborg woods.
A wooden circle 60 metres across on steel legs, half planted on the beach and half standing in the bay, so the walk never ends and the view turns through city, forest and open sea. It was built for Sculpture by the Sea in 2015 as a temporary piece and the city now rebuilds it every spring.
The department store put a free terrace on its roof, with glass panels set into the deck that look straight down onto the pedestrian street. It is the easiest high vantage point in the centre, the cathedral tower sits across the rooftops, and nobody checks whether you bought anything downstairs.
