Solo travel, ten cities that are easy alone.

Ten cities where one person is never at a disadvantage: safe streets, transit that replaces a car, and tables, bars and hostels where a stranger soon becomes company.

Ranked by safety first, using each country's place in the 2026 Global Peace Index, then by how far one person gets without a car and how readily they meet people. Every pick hands off to a full city guide.

FAQ

What is the safest city for solo travel?+
Reykjavík tops this list because Iceland has ranked first in the Global Peace Index every year since 2008. The city is small, walkable and has very low violent crime.
How is this list ranked?+
By safety first, using each country's rank in the 2026 Global Peace Index from the Institute for Economics and Peace. Transit without a car and how easily a solo traveller meets people decide the copy and the picks.
Is solo travel more expensive?+
Usually, because a room costs the same for one as for two. Hostel private rooms, counter dining and transit passes close most of the gap; Taipei and Lisbon are the cheapest cities here.
Which of these cities is best for meeting people?+
Lisbon and Melbourne, for their hostel scenes and walking tours, and Wellington for its small bars. In Tokyo and Seoul eating alone is ordinary, so being alone draws no attention at all.
Why are Taipei and Seoul ranked lower?+
The Global Peace Index weighs militarisation and regional conflict, which pull Taiwan and South Korea down. On the index's societal safety measure alone, Taiwan ranks 25th, well above its overall 42nd.
