Pha That Luang
The national symbol, reproduced on the state seal and on the banknotes. Setthathirath moved the Lan Xang capital here in 1560 and raised the stupa in 1566; a Siamese army destroyed it in 1828, and what stands is a 1930s reconstruction worked up from drawings of the ruin. On the November full moon it is the focus of the largest religious gathering in the country.
