Tartu is Estonia’s university town and its second city, small enough to cross on foot and dense enough to hold two days. Start on Toomemägi, where the cathedral ruins house the University of Tartu Museum, then drop to Town Hall Square and the wooden streets of Supilinn and Karlova. The Estonian National Museum at Raadi is worth a half day on its own.
Estonia’s second city runs on a university founded in 1632, and it wears that lightly. The centre is compact, the Emajõgi cuts through it, and the best of Tartu sits in its wooden districts rather than its monuments. It was European Capital of Culture in 2024, and the programme left real venues behind.
The national collection sits on the edge of a Soviet military airfield, and the building takes the runway as its starting line: a 350 metre glass wedge by Tsuyoshi Tane that lifts as it goes. The permanent Estonian exhibition alone runs most of that length.
The hill held the Tarbatu stronghold, then the bishop’s castle, then the cathedral the Livonian War wrecked. The University of Tartu Museum now sits inside the brick shell and opens its towers. The park around it carries the Angel’s Bridge and the Devil’s Bridge.
The pink town hall closes one end, the fountain with the kissing students holds the middle, and the leaning house at number 18 tilts 5.8 degrees, more than the tower at Pisa. This is where the city arranges to meet, and the terraces run down to the river.
Johann Wilhelm Krause’s classical block opened in 1809 and still runs the university. Upstairs is the oldest art museum in Estonia: plaster casts of Greek and Roman sculpture, and a mummy chamber almost nobody expects to find in southern Estonia.
One of the largest science centres in the Baltics, and one that assumes adults will play too. A planetarium, a workshop theatre that stages experiments in front of an audience, and a bicycle you ride along a cable above the atrium.
Soup Town, where the streets are named Potato, Pea, Bean and Berry after the gardens that fed them. It went up in the mid eighteenth century as workers’ housing, escaped the bombing that flattened richer streets, and is now the bohemian quarter.
A Soviet factory that made refrigeration equipment and submarine parts, with non-working umbrellas produced as cover. It now holds studios, galleries, bars and restaurants around a courtyard that runs concerts and film screenings through the summer.
A brick Gothic church carrying more than a thousand terracotta figures, each modelled separately. About 200 originals survived the war, and copies now stand in the niches they came from. Nothing else in northern Europe is decorated like it.
Built on the old castle site in 1810, the Old Observatory anchors the Struve Geodetic Arc: 2,820 km of survey triangles from the Arctic to the Black Sea that first fixed the shape of the earth. The arc is a UNESCO site, and the instruments are still here.
A working print shop rather than a display case. Letterpress machines saved from scrapping when the centre was founded in 2010, a paper studio, and bookbinding benches. You leave with something you printed yourself.

The airport sits at Ülenurme, south of the city. Finnair flies the Helsinki route in about 45 minutes, which is the practical connection for most long-haul arrivals. A bus runs into the centre.
Elron runs from Tallinn’s Balti jaam to Tartu several times a day in about two hours, calling at Ülemiste. The station is a short walk or one bus ride west of the centre.
Coaches leave Tallinn bus station roughly hourly and take about two and a half hours. Lux Express and the other operators sell through Tpilet, and the Tartu terminal is in the centre.
The centre is walkable end to end. City buses cover Raadi, Annelinn and the outskirts, with single tickets from the driver or a cheaper fare on a rechargeable card. Bolt was founded in Estonia.
