Quick answer

The best things to do in Tainan are Chihkan Tower and the two Yongfu Road temples beside it, the Dutch-built Anping Old Fort and the banyan-swallowed Tree House, the Confucius Temple, Hayashi Department Store, Shennong Street after dark and the Chimei Museum. Give it three days, start each one with beef soup, and plan evenings around which night market is trading.

Tainan was the seat of government for Taiwan for more than two centuries, until 1887, and it still holds the island's oldest forts, its first Confucian academy and a temple on almost every block. The old city is flat and compact, and it eats earlier and better than anywhere else in the country.

The 10 best things to do in Tainan

1

Climb the platform at Chihkan Tower

History· No. 212, Sec. 2, Minzu Rd, West Central District

The Dutch built Fort Provintia here in 1653, and Koxinga made it his seat of government after taking the island in 1662. Little Dutch masonry survives under the two Qing-era pavilions on top. It stays open into the evening, when the lit roofs are the better view.

Walk the last wall of Fort Zeelandia

History· No. 82, Guosheng Rd, Anping District

The Dutch East India Company began Fort Zeelandia in 1624, and the brick south wall of its outer fort is all that is left of their work. Koxinga took it in 1662 and renamed the place Anping. Climb the lookout tower for the view over the old harbour.

Tainan travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Tainan?+
Three. One for the old city (Chihkan Tower, the Yongfu Road temples, the Confucius Temple, Hayashi and Shennong Street), one for Anping (the fort, the Tree House and the Eternal Golden Castle), and one for the Chimei Museum or a day out to Qigu or the Sicao mangroves.
Which Tainan night market is open tonight?+
It depends on the day, because the markets rotate. Garden trades Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, Dadong Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and Wusheng Wednesday and Saturday. Rain closes the open-air lots, so keep a restaurant in reserve.
How do you get from Taipei to Tainan?+
High-speed rail, about 1 hour 45 minutes on the fastest trains, to THSR Tainan Station in Gueiren. From there the Shalun Line shuttle runs to Tainan Station in the city centre in about 25 minutes. Conventional trains are cheaper and take much longer.
When is the best time to visit Tainan?+
November to March. Winter in the south is dry and mild, May brings the plum rains, and June to September is hot, wet and typhoon season. February or March adds the Lantern Festival events in Yanshui and the old city.
How do you get around Tainan without a metro?+
On foot in the old city, which is compact, and by taxi or the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle for Anping and the coast. City buses take an EasyCard. Many visitors rent a scooter, which needs a licence valid in Taiwan.
