Quick answer

Start at Shah Jalal's dargah and Shah Paran's hilltop tomb, walk Keane Bridge and the Surma riverfront, and end the first day in the Malnicherra tea garden. Give the second to Ratargul's flooded forest and the white stones at Bholaganj, and the third to the Tamabil road for Lalakhal's blue river and Jaflong.

Bangladesh's northeastern city sits on the Surma below the Meghalaya hills, with a Sufi saint's tomb at its centre and tea gardens at its edge. Past the city limits it is water country: swamp forest, clear border rivers and haors the monsoon fills each year.

Sylhet travel FAQ

When is the best time to visit Sylhet?+
It depends on what you came for. Ratargul, Bisnakandi and the waterfalls peak in the monsoon, June to September, when most of the city's 4,200 mm of annual rain falls. November to February is dry and cooler, with clearer water at Lalakhal.
How do you get to Sylhet from Dhaka?+
Biman, US-Bangla and Novoair fly daily to Osmani International. Intercity trains cover the 319 km in around seven hours, and coaches take six and a half to seven and a half by road.
How do you visit Ratargul Swamp Forest?+
Hire a CNG or a car to Gowainghat, about 26 km north, then take a boat from the ghat. There is an entry fee, and fixed boat fares are higher for foreigners. Go in the monsoon, when the water rises into the trees.
How many days do you need in Sylhet?+
Three. One for the city: Shah Jalal's dargah, Shah Paran, Keane Bridge and Malnicherra. One for Ratargul and Bholaganj, one for Lalakhal and Jaflong on the Tamabil road. Add two for Srimangal or a Tanguar Haor houseboat.
What should you wear in Sylhet?+
Dress modestly. Covered shoulders and legs suit everyone in the city, and women will want a scarf for the shrines. Shoes come off at every dargah, so wear a pair that slips on and off easily.
