Quick answer

Give Nelson three days. Spend Saturday in town: the market in Montgomery Square from 8am, the Suter and the cathedral steps, then the Centre of New Zealand walk at sunset. Day two is Abel Tasman by water taxi from Kaiteriteri. Day three is the Great Taste Trail to Māpua by bike, or the Moutere cellar doors by car.

Nelson sits at the top of the South Island between Tasman Bay and a ring of hills, with about 2,400 sunshine hours a year. Use it as a base: Abel Tasman, the Moutere wineries and the hop country all lie within an hour of the cathedral steps.

Nelson travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Nelson?+
Three. One in the city for the Saturday market, the Suter, the cathedral and the Centre of New Zealand walk at sunset. One in Abel Tasman by water taxi. One on the Great Taste Trail or at the Moutere cellar doors. Add two for Golden Bay.
When is the best time to visit Nelson?+
December to March, for swimming and the Coast Track at their best. Nelson averages about 2,400 sunshine hours a year, so spring and autumn work well too, and winter is quiet, with the Te Ramaroa light festival in July of even years.
How do you get to Abel Tasman from Nelson?+
Drive to Kaiteriteri (61 km) or Mārahau (67 km), the park's southern gateway. Water taxis run from both all year and must be booked ahead; pick a drop-off, walk back along the Coast Track, and get collected further south.
Do you need a car in Nelson?+
Not in the city: the centre is walkable and eBus routes reach Stoke, Richmond, Tāhunanui and the airport. For Abel Tasman, the wineries, Nelson Lakes and Golden Bay, yes, or book a shuttle or tour.
Is Nelson good for craft beer?+
Yes. Tasman is the only region in New Zealand that grows hops commercially, and McCashin's has brewed in Stoke since 1981. Start at the Free House, a former church on Collingwood Street, and plan around MarchFest.
