Quick answer

The best things to do in Matsumoto are the keep of Matsumoto Castle, the Former Kaichi School, the storehouses of Nakamachi, the frog lane of Nawate and the Yayoi Kusama rooms at the City Museum of Art. All five sit within a 20-minute walk of the station. Give it two days, and spend the second in Kamikochi between late April and mid-November.

Matsumoto keeps one of the twelve castle keeps in Japan that survived the Meiji demolitions, and the town grew up around it on clear Alpine spring water. It is also the gateway to Kamikochi, which sits inside the same city limits.

Matsumoto travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Matsumoto?+
Two. The first covers the castle, Nawate, Nakamachi and the Kusama museum, all on foot from the station. The second is Kamikochi in season, or Azumino and an onsen out of it. One day is enough only for the castle town.
How do you get from Tokyo to Matsumoto?+
Take the Limited Express Azusa from Shinjuku, which takes about 2 hours 40 minutes and runs roughly hourly. From Nagoya, the Limited Express Shinano takes about 2 hours. There is no shinkansen to Matsumoto.
Can you visit Kamikochi as a day trip from Matsumoto?+
Yes, between late April and mid-November. Take the Kamikochi Line to Shin-Shimashima, then the bus for about an hour; private cars are banned. Reserve the bus seat ahead and leave early to walk to Myojin and back.
When is the best time to visit Matsumoto?+
Early April for the castle cherry blossoms, late May for the Craft Fair, and October for autumn colour in Kamikochi. Winter is cold and quiet but clear, and the castle looks best against the snowy Alps.
Is Matsumoto Castle worth going inside?+
Yes. The keep is original, not a concrete rebuild, and the climb through six floors of timber is the point. Arrive at opening: the stairs are narrow and steep, and the queue for them builds by mid-morning.
