Ride the funicular up Monte San Salvatore first. The summit reads the whole lake and settles where the rest of the city sits. Give the afternoon to Piazza della Riforma, Luini’s Passion fresco in Santa Maria degli Angioli and the walk through Parco Ciani. Keep day two for the water: a boat out to Gandria or Morcote, and the olive trail walked back.
Lugano is Switzerland run in Italian: palm trees along the promenade, arcaded streets behind it, and a funicular climbing out of the city on either side of the bay. The old town crosses in fifteen minutes. Everything past it is reached by boat, funicular or rack railway.
The funicular out of Paradiso reaches the 912 metre summit in about twelve minutes, and the terrace at the top reads the whole Ceresio at once: Lugano’s bay on one side, the Italian shore on the other. Ride it first, it settles where everything else sits.
The city’s front room: a pastel square of café terraces under the neoclassical Palazzo Civico, with the arcaded lanes of the old town running off it toward the water. Traffic-free, and the stage for most of what Lugano puts on.
Bernardino Luini painted the Passion and Crucifixion across the dividing wall here in 1529, more than 150 figures deep, and it is the finest Lombard Renaissance work in Switzerland. He trained under Leonardo and the faces show it. His Last Supper is on the nave’s south wall.
Sixty-three thousand square metres of botanical park on the lakefront, cedars and magnolias and gravel walks laid out around Villa Ciani. It is the city’s green centre and the head of the promenade east toward Cassarate.
The art museum of Italian-speaking Switzerland, split between Mario Botta’s lakefront arts centre and Palazzo Reali in the old town. The LAC wing takes the modern and contemporary shows, in rooms good enough to be worth the ticket on their own.
The other summit: 925 metres, reckoned the sunniest mountain in Switzerland, and reached by a 1908 funicular that climbs out of Cassarate in two sections. The village of Brè below the top is a working hamlet with an art trail through its lanes.
A 3.3 kilometre lakeside path from Castagnola to Gandria, laid out in 2002 by the Amici dell’Olivo with 18 boards on a crop Ticino has grown since 769. Gandria at the far end is stone alleys, an old press and no cars. Walk out, take the boat back.
The lake boats run the length of the Ceresio, and Morcote at the southern tip is the leg worth taking: arcaded lakefront houses under a stepped climb to Santa Maria del Sasso. The timetable runs late March to mid-October, so read it before planning a return.
A rack railway has climbed the nine kilometres from Capolago to the 1,704 metre summit since 1890, and since 2017 it has ended at Mario Botta’s Fiore di Pietra, a stone flower holding two restaurants and a roof terrace. Clear days reach the Po plain.
The Renaissance façade was finished in 1517 and is one of the Lombard masterpieces of the form, set on the hill between the railway station and the old town. The terrace outside it is the best free view of the roofs and the bay in the centre.

At Agno, 6 km west. Scheduled commercial flights are suspended; the field still handles business, charter and flight-school traffic.
Lugano sits on the Gotthard line. The base tunnel put Zurich under two hours away, and Milan is a short hop south across the border.
