Walk the Chapel Bridge and the Musegg Wall first: both are free and both are twenty minutes’ work. Give a half day to the Swiss Museum of Transport or the Rosengart Collection, then take a boat out onto the lake in the afternoon. Keep one whole day for a mountain, Pilatus for the engineering or Rigi for the view back over the water.
Lucerne sits where the Reuss leaves the lake, under two mountains that each run a railway to their summit. The old town is medieval and walkable end to end in twenty minutes, the museums are better than a city of 86,000 has any business holding, and the boat pier is outside the station door.
The oldest surviving covered wooden bridge in Europe, thrown across the Reuss in the 1330s with the octagonal Water Tower welded to its side. Fire took two thirds of it in August 1993 and the rebuild was done in eight months. Cross from the Rathausquai end to read the gable paintings in order.
The steepest cogwheel railway in the world, 48 percent at its worst, running from Alpnachstad to a 2,132 metre summit since 1889. The Golden Round Trip pairs it with a lake boat out and gondolas down to Kriens. The rack railway runs May to November, snow permitting; the Kriens cableway runs all year.
The most visited museum in Switzerland, and not only by children: 20,000 square metres of locomotives, aircraft, cars and a real submarine, with a planetarium and a chocolate exhibition attached. Ten minutes from the station by trolleybus, or by boat to the museum’s own landing.
A dying lion nine metres long, cut into the rock face in 1820 and 1821 to a design by Bertel Thorvaldsen, for the Swiss Guards killed at the Tuileries in 1792. Mark Twain called it the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world. It takes ten minutes and earns them.
Eight hundred metres of intact rampart above the old town, with nine towers, four of them open and free to climb. The Zyt tower holds the city clock of 1535, which strikes the hour a minute before every other clock in Lucerne. Wall and towers close from November to March.
Europe’s first mountain railway opened from Vitznau to this summit on 21 May 1871 and still climbs it. Take the boat to Vitznau, the rack train up, then descend the far side to Goldau or by cable car to Weggis. The reward is the whole lake, seen from above and end to end.
Siegfried and Angela Rosengart’s private holdings, opened to the public in 2002 in the old Swiss National Bank building. Thirty-two Picasso paintings and 125 works by Paul Klee, hung without crowds, five minutes from the station.
Five steamers built between 1901 and 1928 still work this lake, the largest such fleet on any inland water. Lucerne to Flüelen takes about three hours each way, past the Bürgenstock, Vitznau and the Rütli meadow. These are scheduled services, not a cruise.
Jean Nouvel’s culture and congress centre on the water, its roof cantilevered far out over the quay. The concert hall inside is among the best rooms in Europe for orchestral sound and is the home of the Lucerne Festival. Walking under the roof costs nothing.
Found by accident in 1872 during cellar digging: 32 potholes ground into the sandstone by meltwater at the end of the last ice age, the largest of them nine metres across. A mirror labyrinth and a viewing tower were added later. It shares a street with the Lion Monument.
