Quick answer

The best things to do in Lilongwe are the forest trails at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, the Kamuzu Mausoleum on Capital Hill, Old Town's main market and craft stalls, a nsima dinner at Kumbali Cultural Village and the view from Bunda Mountain. Two days covers the city; add Dedza's pottery and rock art, or head east to Lake Malawi.

Lilongwe became Malawi's capital in 1975 and grew as a planned city of numbered Areas: a riverside Old Town of markets on one side, the ministries of Capital Hill on the other, and a forest sanctuary between them. It is a gateway more than a showpiece, but two days here are well spent.

The 10 best things to do in Lilongwe

1

Walk the forest trails at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre

Nature· Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary, between Old Town and City Centre

Malawi's only sanctuary for orphaned, injured and rescued wild animals sits in riverside forest in the middle of the city. Sanctuary tours are closed to the public, so come for the elevated boardwalk and the 2, 3.5 and 4.8 km trails.

2

Stand at the Kamuzu Mausoleum

Landmark· Presidential Way, Capital Hill

Hastings Kamuzu Banda, who ruled Malawi from independence until 1994, lies in a marble and granite tomb completed in 2006. Four pillars carry his watchwords: unity, loyalty, obedience and discipline. Parliament stands next door.

3

Haggle at the craft market by the Old Post Office

Market· Outside the Old Post Office, Old Town

Woodcarvers, weavers and jewellers work and sell from the same stalls, and Malawi's carvers are among the best in the region. Bargaining is expected: start well below the first price and walk away politely if it will not move.

Best atWeekday mornings
TipCarry small kwacha notes; card machines are rare at the stalls.
4

Wade into Old Town's main market

Market· Malangalanga Road, Old Town

Bicycle parts, live chickens, dried usipa and second-hand clothes share the lanes by the bus depot. It is the most Malawian hour you can spend in the capital, and the busiest. Pickpockets work the crowds, so travel light.

TipLeave the camera and bag at the hotel, and go with a local guide on a first visit.
5

Eat nsima and dance at Kumbali Cultural Village

Culture· Kumbali estate, on the edge of Lilongwe

A community-run village on the Kumbali dairy estate stages village tours, a nsima dinner with pumpkin leaves and beans, and dancing around the fire. It is staged, but the food is the real thing and the income goes to local projects.

TipIt runs by arrangement, not drop-in: book through Kumbali or your lodge.
6

Watch tobacco sell at the Kanengo auction floors

Landmark· Auction Holdings, Kanengo, about 7 km north of the centre

Tobacco carries Malawi's economy, and each season the crop of hundreds of thousands of smallholders is sold here. A public gallery looks down on a floor that opened in 1979 and still hosts the season's official opening.

TipTake a taxi: minibuses reach Kanengo, but the floors are hard to find on foot.
7

Climb Bunda Mountain for the view

Nature· Bunda, about 25 minutes' drive from Old Town

A rocky 2.7 km return climb with about 210 m of ascent, and the best view near the capital: Nkhoma Mountain, Kamuzu Dam and the city from the top. Allow two hours car to car.

Bird the miombo at Dzalanyama Forest Reserve

Nature· Dzalanyama, 60 km southwest of Lilongwe

Steep wooded hills run 70 km along the Mozambique border, and birders come for miombo specials like the Olive-headed Weaver and Stierling's Woodpecker. The forest lodge hires mountain bikes and arranges community guides.

TipRead the lodge's directions before you go: the forest roads are rough.
9

Buy pottery in Dedza and see Chongoni's rock art

Day trip· Dedza, 90 km south on the M1

Dedza Pottery sits on the M1 an hour from the capital, with a studio shop and a lodge. It is also where to find a guide for Chongoni, the densest cluster of rock art in central Africa and a UNESCO site since 2006.

10

Tour the museum at Mua's KuNgoni Centre

Day trip· Mua, Dedza District, about two hours from Lilongwe

Malawi's most extensive museum complex grew out of a Catholic mission founded in 1902. Its rooms on Chewa, Ngoni and Yao culture are the clearest introduction to the country you will find, and more than 120 carvers work on site.

Lilongwe travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Lilongwe?+
Two. One for Old Town's markets, the Wildlife Centre trails and Capital Hill, one for Bunda Mountain and a dinner at Kumbali. Most visitors then head for Lake Malawi or the M1 south to Dedza.
When is the best time to visit Lilongwe?+
May to September, in the dry season: cool, clear days until August, then heat building in September and October. The rains run from about November to April.
Do I need a visa for Malawi?+
Most likely. On 2 January 2026 Malawi revoked the visa waiver it introduced in 2024, so most Western nationalities need a visa again. Apply through the government e-visa portal before you fly.
Is Lilongwe safe for visitors?+
Mostly, with city sense. Pickpockets work the Old Town market and bus depot, so carry little and leave valuables behind. Take a taxi after dark rather than walking, and agree the fare first.
How do I get from Lilongwe to Lake Malawi?+
Senga Bay, the nearest beach, is about 90 minutes east by road via Salima. Cape Maclear, inside Lake Malawi National Park, is about three hours south. Minibuses run to both, but a car or lodge transfer is far quicker.
