Quick answer

Lijiang is a Naxi city about 2,400 metres up in northwest Yunnan, with a UNESCO-listed old town and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on the horizon. Walk Dayan at dawn, ride the Glacier Park cable car, see the Ming murals at Baisha and hike Tiger Leaping Gorge. Give it three or four days, and book the mountain early.

Lijiang is two places: a canal-threaded Naxi old town that has become one of China's busiest tourist streets, and a 5,596-metre mountain 30 km north that no crowd can shrink. Come for both, sleep somewhere quieter than the lanes, and keep a day for the gorge.

The 10 best things to do in Lijiang

1

Ride the Glacier Park cable car on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Mountain· Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Scenic Area, Yulong County

The cable car lifts you to a platform at 4,506 metres under the main peak, and a boardwalk climbs on toward 4,680. Tickets are real-name and time-slotted, and peak days sell out fast. Book the moment booking opens.

TimeFull day
Cost¥100 park entry
Best atClear winter mornings
TipBuy a can of oxygen at the base and take the boardwalk slowly; the air at the top is thin.
2

Walk Dayan Old Town before the shops open

Old town· Dayan Old Town, Gucheng District

Dayan is the core of a UNESCO site listed in 1997: stone lanes, canals fed from Black Dragon Pool, and Sifang Square at the centre. By late morning it is a shopping street. Walk it at seven, when the water and the lanes are the point.

Time2–3 hours
Cost¥50 Old Town fee, valid a year
Best atBefore 9am
TipThere is no gate
3

See the mountain from Black Dragon Pool

Park· Jade Spring Park, north of Dayan Old Town

The postcard view of Lijiang: the snow mountain reflected in the pool behind a white marble bridge, with the Ming-era Wufeng Tower at the north end. This spring feeds the Old Town canals. Come early for still water and a clear peak.

Time1–2 hours
CostOld Town fee checked here
Best atEarly morning
TipThe Dongba Culture Museum sits just outside the north gate, so pair the two.
4

Hike the Tiger Leaping Gorge high trail

Hike· Trailhead at Qiaotou, Hutiaoxia

About 16 km along the gorge wall above the Jinsha River, with Haba and Jade Dragon snow mountains on either side. Most people take two days and sleep at a family guesthouse halfway. Skip it in the summer rains, when landslides close sections.

Time2 days
Cost¥65 gorge ticket
Best atOctober to May
TipCarry cash. Signal is patchy on the trail and not every guesthouse takes mobile payment.
5

Tour the Mu Mansion, seat of the Naxi chieftains

Palace· Mu Mansion, Dayan Old Town

The Mu family ruled Lijiang as hereditary chieftains from the Ming to the Qing. Their compound burned in the 19th century, and what stands was rebuilt after the 1996 earthquake, so read it as a reconstruction. The courtyards still show who ran the town.

Time1–2 hours
CostTicketed separately
Best atLate afternoon
TipClimb Lion Hill behind it afterwards for the Wangu Pavilion and the view over the rooftops.
6

Find the Ming murals at Baisha

Village· Baisha Village, Yulong County

Baisha was the first Naxi settlement and the Mu clan's birthplace, now a quiet village north of town. At the end of its main street, Dabaoji Palace holds the best of the Baisha murals: Buddhist and Taoist figures painted in Tibetan, Han and Naxi styles.

TimeHalf day
CostMurals ticketed
Best atWeekday mornings
TipShuhe is on the way back to Dayan, so string the two into one half day.
7

Slow down in Shuhe Old Town

Old town· Shuhe Old Town, Gucheng District

Shuhe is the smaller, calmer piece of the UNESCO listing, an old stop on the Tea Horse Road. Its stone Qinglong Bridge dates to the Ming dynasty, and the stream below rises at Jiuding Dragon Pool. Stay here if Dayan's evenings sound too loud.

TimeHalf day
CostLanes open to walk
Best atEvening, after the tour groups
TipThe fish in Jiuding Dragon Pool are sacred: look, but do not feed or catch them.
8

Watch winter birds on Lashi Lake

Wetland· Lashihai Wetland, Yulong County

Yunnan's first wetland nature reserve, west of town, where tens of thousands of migratory birds winter from December to February. Villages around the shore rent horses for a ride on the old Tea Horse Road. Go by taxi: no public transport runs out here.

TimeHalf day

Best atDecember to February
TipAgree the price and the route with the horseman before you mount
9

Walk Blue Moon Valley and Spruce Meadow

Mountain· Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Scenic Area, Yulong County

If Glacier Park is sold out, this is a fine day anyway: a gentler cable car to Spruce Meadow at about 3,240 metres, then the Baishui River pools of Blue Moon Valley, milky blue over white mud on a sunny day.

TimeHalf day
CostPark entry plus cable car
Best atSunny late mornings
TipImpression Lijiang is staged at Ganhaizi nearby, so the show fits the same day.
10

Climb Lion Hill to the Wangu Pavilion

Viewpoint· Lion Hill, Dayan Old Town

A 33-metre wooden pavilion on the highest ground in the Old Town, rebuilt in 1997 on 16 columns. From the top floor the tiled roofscape spreads below, with the snow mountain behind. It is the best orientation in town.

TipCome up from the Mu Mansion side and walk down into the lanes as the lanterns go on.

Lijiang travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Lijiang?+
Three or four. One for the Old Town and Black Dragon Pool, one for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and one for Baisha, Shuhe and Lashi Lake. Add two to walk Tiger Leaping Gorge, and two more for Lugu Lake, which is too far for a day.
How do you book the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car?+
Online and early. Glacier Park tickets are real-name and time-slotted, need your passport details, and sell out quickly in peak season. If they are gone, the Spruce Meadow cable car and Blue Moon Valley make a full day on their own.
Is there an entry fee for Lijiang Old Town?+
Yes. The ¥50 maintenance fee is valid for a year. There is no gate, so nobody stops you in the lanes, but it is checked at Black Dragon Pool and at the snow mountain ticket counter. Pay it online or at a service booth.
When is the best time to visit Lijiang?+
October and November, then late March to May. Winter is dry and sunny, with the clearest mountain views and cold nights. June to September is the rainy season: cloud hides the peaks and landslides can close the gorge trail.
How do you get to Lijiang from Kunming or Dali?+
By train. The fastest D trains from Kunming take a little over three hours, and the quickest from Dali about an hour and a half, both into Lijiang Station. Since 2023 the line runs on to Shangri-La in roughly 70 to 80 minutes.
