Quick answer

Liepāja is Latvia's seaside music city and its old naval port. Give day one to the centre: Holy Trinity's organ, St Anne's altar, Pētertirgus market, the Liepāja Museum and a concert at the Great Amber. Day two, head north to Karosta for the military prison, the Orthodox naval cathedral and the Northern Forts crumbling into the surf, then end on the beach.

Latvia's third city was built twice: once as a Courland trading port with a market square and baroque churches, then from 1890 as the Tsar's naval base of Karosta at its north end. Between them run eight kilometres of Blue Flag beach and a concert hall shaped like amber.

Liepāja travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Liepāja?+
Two. One for the centre: Holy Trinity, St Anne's, Pētertirgus market, the museum and an evening concert at the Great Amber. One for Karosta, the Northern Forts and the beach. Add a third for Kuldīga or Pāvilosta.
How do you get from Riga to Liepāja?+
By coach, which takes about 3 to 3.5 hours and runs through the day, or by Vivi train in a little over three hours on the days it runs. Liepāja's airport has no scheduled flights.
Is Karosta worth visiting?+
Yes. The prison, the Orthodox naval cathedral and the forts on the beach are the reason many people come. Parts of the district are run down; the Northern Forts ruins are unstable, so see the bunkers with a guide.
Can you swim at Liepāja beach?+
In summer, yes. The central beach has held a Blue Flag every year since 2001. The Baltic stays cool, warmest in July and August; beaches south of town, such as Bernāti, have rip currents.
Can you spend a night in Karosta Prison?+
Yes, by reservation. The prison runs overnight stays and a role-play show where guards treat visitors as inmates. Book directly with the prison by phone or email; walk-in tours run in season.
