Two days covers León properly, three if you want a day trip. Day one is the Gothic core: the cathedral in the morning while the glass is lit from the east, San Isidoro and its Royal Pantheon after lunch, then the Barrio Húmedo for tapas. Day two runs west from Casa Botines to San Marcos and out to MUSAC. Add a third for Astorga or Las Médulas, both reachable without a car.
León is the cathedral city most itineraries skip on the way to Santiago, which is the best argument for stopping. A Roman legion laid out the street grid, the kingdom of León ran an early parliament here, and the Gothic cathedral holds one of the largest surviving collections of medieval stained glass in Europe. The centre crosses in twenty minutes on foot.
The reason to come, and the one sight that rearranges the rest of the trip. Thirteenth-century masons pushed French Gothic to its structural limit here, thinning the walls until roughly 1,800 square metres of stained glass could take their place. The glass runs from the 13th century to the 18th and has survived where most of Europe lost its own.
The Romanesque counterweight to the cathedral, and the older story. Kings of León are buried under a low vaulted chamber whose ceilings were painted in the 12th century and never repainted, which is how it earned the name Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art. The church is free; the pantheon is the ticket.
Gaudí built only three things outside Catalonia and this is the largest: a neo-Gothic apartment and warehouse block from the late 1880s, with corner turrets, a dry moat and a Saint George over the door. It reads as a castle dropped into a business district, which is roughly what the textile merchants wanted.
Castile and León's contemporary art museum, and the building that put modern León on the architecture circuit. Mansilla and Tuñón wrapped it in coloured glass panels sampled from the cathedral's stained glass, then ran the galleries as a single-storey grid. It won the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture in 2007.
A 16th-century monastery and pilgrim hospital of the Order of Santiago, with a plateresque facade about a hundred metres long facing the river. It has been a Parador since 1986, but the church, sacristy and museum are open to anyone: choir stalls from the 1530s and sculpture by Juan de Juni. It also spent the Civil War as a prison camp, which the site does not hide.
The medieval quarter south of the cathedral, and the reason León eats better than cities twice its size. Somewhere between 100 and 150 bars are packed into a few blocks around Plaza de San Martín, and the local rule holds: order a drink and a plate arrives with it, chosen by the bar. The method is to move, one drink and one tapa per stop.
The provincial museum, rehoused in the Pallarés building on Plaza de Santo Domingo, and the fastest way to understand what you are walking on. The route runs from prehistory through the Roman camp of the Legio VII Gemina to the medieval kingdom, and the star object is the Cristo de Carrizo, an 11th-century ivory crucifix. An hour makes the churches legible.
Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón started this Renaissance palace for the Guzmán family in 1560, and the provincial government has run its business from it since the restoration. The courtyard is the reason to go in: two tiers of arcades, carved to a standard the exterior only hints at. It stands beside Casa Botines, so you get four centuries of ambition in one glance.
León began as a legionary camp, and the outline never moved. What survives is the later fortification of round towers, the cubos, raised over the original camp wall and still standing below the cathedral. Walk the northern stretch at dusk, when the floodlights pick out the courses of reused Roman stone. Free, twenty minutes, and it explains the shape of the old town.
Officially Plaza de Santa María del Camino, universally the grain square, and the prettiest corner of the old town. Rough river cobbles, two rows of plane trees, a fountain and a Romanesque church, with almost nothing commercial to break the spell. It sits on the pilgrim route, so mornings bring walkers heading west. Ten minutes, no ticket.

The early 20th-century grid around Ordoño II and Padre Isla, between the old town and the train station. Wide pavements, chain shops, the city's business hotels.
The modern district west of the river, built around San Marcos, MUSAC and the Auditorio. Newest buildings in León and a fifteen-minute walk back to the cathedral.
Stalls fill the arcaded square on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, as they have for centuries. Produce, cheese and cured meat from the province.
