Give Labuan Bajo four days. Two go to the water, on a day boat or an overnight phinisi to Padar, Komodo, Pink Beach and Manta Point. The other two belong to the mainland: Batu Cermin cave, the Cunca Wulang canyon, and a sunset from Sylvia Hill or the harbour bars. Book park entry through a licensed operator before you fly, because walk-up tickets are gone.
Labuan Bajo is a working port on the western tip of Flores that became Indonesia’s second gateway almost overnight. Nobody comes for the town. They come for the water in front of it: Komodo National Park, dragons on two islands, and some of the strongest current diving in Asia.
The three-bay view is the picture that sells Flores, and the climb to it is roughly 800 wooden steps and half an hour of steep switchbacks. Go at first light: boats leave the harbour around 05:00, the ridge is still cool, and the fleet is an hour behind you.
Komodo holds one of the two largest dragon subpopulations in the park, and the only legal way to see them is a ranger-led walk from Loh Liang. Rangers set the route and the pace, on short, medium or long loops through savanna and monsoon forest. Nobody walks alone.
Reef mantas queue at the cleaning stations along a rubble ridge about three kilometres long, and the drift is gentle enough that snorkellers see them as often as divers do. Ten to fifteen metres, all year, no guarantees. Take the first slot of the day, before the fleet arrives.
The nearer dragon island, about ninety minutes from the harbour, and often the better one for actually seeing wildlife: open savanna, water buffalo, macaques and an estimated 1,100 to 1,500 dragons. Rangers run the same three loop lengths from the Loh Buaya station.
The colour comes from crushed red organ-pipe coral mixed through white sand, and it reads strongest wet, at the waterline, in low light. The snorkelling straight off the sand is better than the colour: hard coral, reef fish and the occasional turtle.
A pinnacle in mid-channel that splits the current, so one face is a wall of fish and the other is a washing machine. A guide who reads slack water is what decides whether this is one of the best dives in Asia or forty minutes spent clinging to rock.
Thousands of flying foxes stream out of the mangroves in one long ribbon at sunset, and boats moor off the island to watch it. Usually an overnight-trip stop rather than a day-boat one. Bring a layer: the deck turns cold the moment the light goes.
The first stop out of the harbour and the shortest climb in the park: fifteen minutes up a steep spine, looking down on a curved white sandbar. Most boats give you an hour, which covers the hill and a swim, and the path is loose underfoot both ways.
Mirror Stone, ten minutes inland from town, where midday sun drops through a crack in the roof and bounces off the limestone. Marine fossils sit in the walls, which is the real point: this hill was seabed. Take the guide at the gate, it is dark and low.
A canyon of smooth grey rock about thirty kilometres east of town, reached by two hours of road and half an hour on foot through forest and rice terraces. The pools are cold and deep enough to jump into. Go in the dry season, when the river runs clear.
Out around 06:00, back after dark: Padar, Pink Beach, Manta Point and Kelor in one run.

Daily ASDP ferries run from Sape on Sumbawa in eight to nine hours. Pelni’s national liners call less often, from Bali, Lombok, Makassar and Surabaya.
Every trip into Komodo leaves from the town waterfront. Park entry is booked through a licensed operator now, so the boat and the permit are one purchase.
The main street and the waterfront are walkable end to end. Beyond that it is a rented scooter, an ojek or a negotiated car: there are no metered taxis.
