The best things to do in Kigali are the Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, a community walking tour of Nyamirambo, the fabric aisles of Kimironko Market, the Campaign Against Genocide Museum inside Parliament and the wetland boardwalks at Nyandungu. Two to three days is right. The city is compact and built on hills, so use moto taxis or an app for anything more than a few blocks.
Kigali was founded in 1907 and stayed a small administrative town until independence made it the capital. Almost everything a visitor sees was built after 1994, and the city is unusually deliberate about it. That order is the first thing people notice and the least interesting thing about the place.
Opened in 2004 on ground where mass graves hold more than a quarter of a million people, and it works through documents and testimony rather than spectacle. The room given to the children who were killed is the part people remember. Free, and the place to start a Kigali trip.
Started in 2007 by eighteen women living in the quarter, and the best introduction to any Kigali neighbourhood: a salon, a compound pounding cassava leaves, two mosques, a tailor, and lunch in a member's home. The fees fund the cooperative.
The largest market in the city, and worth an hour even if you buy nothing. Pick a length of kitenge in the fabric aisle, agree a price, then walk it ten metres to a tailor who will measure you and quote a turnaround, often the next day.
Inside the Parliament building, whose facade still carries the shell damage from 1994. It tells the military half of the story: the tunnel, the radio room, the breakout on 7 April. Guided, ninety minutes, and explicit about being one side's account.
A degraded valley of brickworks restored to wetland and opened in 2022: papyrus channels, ponds and boardwalks ten minutes from the airport road. Free, gates at 06:00, and the one thing in Kigali worth setting an alarm for.
Richard Kandt built this in 1907 and in choosing the site effectively founded the city. Go before the memorial rather than after: it is the only museum here that deals at length with the Rwanda that existed before 1897, and the chronology makes more sense that way.
Habyarimana's residence until his aircraft was shot down over the grounds on 6 April 1994. Pieces of it are still there, and the house now holds the Rwanda Art Museum, which makes a strange and effective double reading. Four kilometres from the airport.
The high ground west of the centre, 1,853 metres, two to three hours round trip on the tracks people use to get to work. Near the top, Fazenda Sengha ends the climb with lunch and the city below. Go early, before the haze thickens.
Rwanda grows very good coffee and exports nearly all of it, which is the gap this was set up to close. Book the cupping rather than dropping in: a guided tasting that explains why a Nyamasheke tastes nothing like a Rulindo.
Its shape references a woven royal residence, and after dark the lattice is lit in the colours of the flag. Standing under it is less rewarding than seeing it from across the valley, so pick a Kimihurura terrace and let it come on at dusk.
The first of the modern Kigali studios, opened in 2007 when the country had almost no commercial art scene. Most of the other spaces here trace back to it.

Built into a Kibagabaga hillside around a pool, with one of the widest views in the city. It works as a long lunch, a sunset drink or a late night.
A Remera bar that draws its crowd from the neighbourhoods rather than the hotels, with a live band at weekends. The least self-conscious night here.

The commercial heart: the Union Trade Centre, the big hotels and a run of embassies on quiet streets. One of the few parts where walking between things works.
