Quick answer

Kisumu is Kenya's lake city, the place to meet Lake Victoria. Spend day one on the shore: impalas at the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary, the Luo homestead at the Kisumu Museum, grilled tilapia at Dunga Beach and sunset by boat from Hippo Point. On day two head out to the rock of Kit Mikayi or the rainforest of Kakamega, and save a Sunday morning for Kibuye Market.

Kenya's third city grew up around the railway's lake terminus in 1901 and still faces the water: fishing boats land at Dunga, hippos graze by the Impala Sanctuary and the sun drops into the Winam Gulf most evenings. It is the capital of Luo country and the base for western Kenya's islands, forests and rock shrines.

The 10 best things to do in Kisumu

1

Watch the sunset from Hippo Point

Lakeshore· Hippo Point, Dunga, Kisumu

A grassy headland on the Winam Gulf, better known for unobstructed sunsets over Lake Victoria than for its occasional hippos. Arrive an hour before dusk and hire one of the boat captains on the shore for a sunset loop; agree the price and the length of the trip before you board.

TipBusy at weekends and on holidays
2

Eat lake fish at Dunga Beach

Food· Dunga Beach, Dunga, Kisumu

Kisumu's working fish landing, where the boats bring in the catch and the kitchens behind the beach fry or grill it on the spot; most of the cooks from the old Lwang'ni beach moved here. Pick your tilapia whole, then have it wet-fried with ugali and greens.

3

Walk with the impalas at Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

Wildlife· Impala Sanctuary, near Hippo Point, about 3 km from the centre

A small Kenya Wildlife Service sanctuary on the lakeshore where impalas and zebras roam freely and hippos come up from the swamps to graze. Walk the trail toward the water in the cool of the early morning, before the heat and the school groups.

4

Tour the Kisumu Museum

Museum· Kisumu–Kericho Road, Milimani

Opened in 1980 by the National Museums of Kenya, it tells western Kenya's story through an aquarium of Lake Victoria fish, a snake park, a cultural history gallery and Ber-gi-dala, a full-scale Luo homestead. Start outside at the homestead, then work through the galleries.

6

Climb Kit Mikayi

Landmark· Off the Kisumu–Bondo road, Seme, about 29 km west

Island· Rusinga Island, Homa Bay County

A lake island joined to Mbita by a short causeway, about three hours from Kisumu by road and the Luanda Kotieno ferry. It holds the mausoleum of Tom Mboya, gazetted a national monument in 2001, and hosts the Rusinga Festival in the days before Christmas.

Kisumu travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Kisumu?+
Two. One for the lakeshore: the Impala Sanctuary in the morning, the Kisumu Museum, a fish lunch at Dunga Beach and sunset at Hippo Point. One for Kit Mikayi or Kakamega Forest. Add a night for Ndere Island or Rusinga Island.
When is the best time to visit Kisumu?+
June to September is the driest window and the best for boats, birding and forest walks. December to February is drier too, and brings the Rusinga and Piny Luo festivals. April is usually the wettest month.
How do you get from Nairobi to Kisumu?+
Fly: Jambojet runs several flights a day of about 50 minutes, some sold as Kenya Airways. By road it is about 330 km, 6.5 to 8 hours by coach. In holiday seasons the overnight Kisumu Safari Train runs from Nairobi Central.
Can you see hippos in Kisumu?+
Yes, with patience. Boats from Dunga Beach and Hippo Point go looking for them, best early on a calm lake; agree the price and the length of the trip first. Hippos are territorial, so keep the distance the boatman sets.
Is Kisumu a good base for western Kenya?+
Yes. Kakamega Forest is about 50 km north, Kit Mikayi 29 km west and Ndere Island 45 minutes by speedboat. Rusinga Island and Ruma National Park are long days on the south shore, and Thimlich Ohinga, 181 km south, is better as an overnight.
