Quick answer

Give Dingle three days. Drive the Slea Head loop clockwise on the first, stopping at Dunbeg Fort, Coumeenoole and the Blasket Centre, and take the ferry from Dunquin Pier to the Great Blasket if the sea allows. On the second, see Gallarus Oratory and Kilmalkedar, then cross the Conor Pass. Keep the third for the distillery, Inch beach or Mount Brandon, and every evening for a trad session in town.

Dingle is the only town on the Dingle Peninsula, Corca Dhuibhne in Irish, 50 km west of Tralee in the Kerry Gaeltacht. It is a fishing harbour with a pub on every corner, and the base for Slea Head, the Blasket Islands and the early Christian sites of the west.

Dingle travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Dingle?+
Three. One for the Slea Head loop and the Blasket Centre, one for Gallarus, Kilmalkedar and the Conor Pass, and one for the Great Blasket ferry, Inch or Mount Brandon. Keep the ferry day flexible, because sailings depend on the swell.
Which way should you drive Slea Head?+
Clockwise, out through Ventry and back through Ballyferriter. The local tourism body asks visitors to treat it as one-way in that direction, so you do not meet coaches on the narrow sections. Allow at least half a day with stops.
Is Fungie the dolphin still in Dingle?+
No. Fungie lived in the harbour from 1983 and was last seen in October 2020. Boats still take visitors out to the Blaskets for whales, dolphins and seabirds, and his bronze statue stands on the waterfront.
Can you visit Dingle without a car?+
Yes. Take the train to Tralee and Bus Éireann route 275 on, about an hour. The town is walkable, and boat trips leave from the marina, but for Slea Head and Gallarus you need a bike, a tour or a taxi.
Do people speak Irish in Dingle?+
Dingle is in the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht, so Irish is spoken in homes and shops and comes first on the road signs, which name the town An Daingean. Everyone also speaks English.
