Give Chania three days. One for the old town, the harbour arm out to the lighthouse, the Municipal Market and the Archaeological Museum. One for a gorge: Samaria if you have the legs and the whole day, Imbros if you do not. One for the west coast, either Balos by boat from Kissamos or Elafonissi by road. A hire car unlocks the beaches and the mountain villages; without one the KTEL bus network still reaches Elafonissi, Sfakia and Rethymno.

Chania is western Crete in one town: a Venetian harbour with an Egyptian lighthouse at its mouth, Ottoman lanes behind it, and the White Mountains an hour inland. Most of what people come for sits outside the walls, so plan the town for early and late and give the middle of the day to a gorge or a beach.

Walk the harbour arm to the Egyptian Lighthouse

The mole curves for about a kilometre around the Venetian basin and ends at the lighthouse, Venetian in origin and rebuilt into its minaret shape under Egyptian rule in the 1830s. Walk it at the end of the day: the light turns the whole waterfront ochre and the crowd stays on the quay behind you.

Hike the Samaria Gorge

National park· Samaria National Park, Xyloskalo, Omalos 730 05

Sixteen kilometres down through the White Mountains, from the Xyloskalo stair at 1,230 metres to the Libyan Sea at Agia Roumeli. The park runs 1 May to 31 October and the gate opens at 07:00. There is no road out at the bottom: the Anendyk ferry to Chora Sfakion or Sougia is the only way back.

Swim in the Balos lagoon

A shallow turquoise lagoon at the tip of the Gramvousa peninsula, inside a protected reserve. Two ways in: the day boat from Kissamos, which also stops at the Venetian fort on Gramvousa island, or the rough track from Kaliviani and a stair down to the sand. The boat is the easier call.

Read ancient Kydonia at the Archaeological Museum

The collection moved into a purpose-built hall in Chalepa in 2022, and it is the clearest account of western Crete anywhere: Minoan Kydonia under the Kastelli hill, Linear B tablets, Roman mosaics from houses in the modern town. An hour is enough and it reframes everything you walk over afterwards.

Shop the reopened Municipal Market

The cross-shaped Agora opened in December 1913 under Venizelos and reopened in April 2026 after a nine-million-euro restoration. It is food and local produce now rather than souvenirs: Cretan cheeses, honey, mountain herbs, olive oil and raki, with a handful of counters cooking to order.

Take the Firkas Fortress and the Maritime Museum

The Venetian bastion at the harbour mouth, where the Greek flag was raised over Crete in 1913. The Maritime Museum of Crete fills it: ship models from the bronze age to the modern navy, plus a hard room on the 1941 Battle of Crete. The rampart view back across the basin is the best in town.

Drive west to Elafonissi

Beach· Elafonissi, Chania 730 01

Seventy-six kilometres of mountain road end at a shallow lagoon and a sandbar tinted pink by crushed foraminifera shells. It is a Natura 2000 site and a turtle nesting ground, so taking sand, shells or plants away is illegal. Chrysoskalitissa monastery sits five kilometres back up the road.

Cross to Loutro from Chora Sfakion

Day trip· Chora Sfakion ferry quay, Sfakia 730 11

Seventy kilometres south over the mountains to Sfakia, then twenty minutes on the Anendyk boat to Loutro, a white village on a cove with no road in at all. Nothing to see and that is the point: you swim, you eat, you take the afternoon boat back. The coast path to Marmara beach leaves from the far end.

Walk down the Imbros Gorge

Eleven kilometres of narrowing limestone from the village of Imbros at 700 metres down towards the south coast, two to three hours at a walking pace. No stair, no ladders, and shade for most of it, which makes it the gorge to do with children or on a day when Samaria is closed.

Climb to the Venizelos Graves

Eleftherios Venizelos, seven times prime minister of Greece, is buried with his son Sofoklis on the hill above Chania. The tombs are plain slabs on an open terrace, and the terrace looks straight down the coast to the harbour and the lighthouse. Open ground, no gate, no ticket.

How many days do you need in Chania?+
Three. One for the old town, the harbour arm and the Archaeological Museum, one for a gorge, and one for the west coast beaches. Add a fourth if you want Sfakia and Loutro on the south coast, which is a full day on its own.
Do you need a car in Chania?+
Not for the town, which is walkable end to end and closed to traffic inside the walls. For Balos, Falassarna, Seitan Limania and the mountain villages a car saves hours. The KTEL bus does reach Elafonissi, Sfakia, Kissamos and Rethymno.
When is the best time to visit Chania?+
May, June and September. The sea is warm from June, the gorges are open from 1 May, and the heat and the crowds both peak in late July and August. November to February is wet and much of the coast shuts down.
Can you hike the Samaria Gorge as a day trip from Chania?+
Yes, and almost everyone does. Early buses run from the central station to Xyloskalo, the walk is 16 km and takes most of the day, and you leave Agia Roumeli by Anendyk ferry to Chora Sfakion or Sougia for the bus back.
How do you reach Balos and Elafonissi without a car?+
Elafonissi has a direct KTEL bus from Chania in summer, about two hours each way. For Balos, take the bus or a transfer to Kissamos port and the day boat, which also lands at the Venetian fort on Gramvousa island.

Airports

Chania International (CHQ), named for Ioannis Daskalogiannis, sits 14 km east on Akrotiri. The KTEL airport bus reaches the central station in about 30 minutes for €2.50, paid to the driver.

Ferries

Souda, 7 km east, is the deep-water port: overnight crossings to Piraeus run by ANEK Lines and Blue Star Ferries, with city bus 13 into town. Kissamos in the west is the boat port for Balos.

Buses

KTEL runs the intercity network out of the station on Kydonias: Rethymno, Sfakia, Kissamos and the summer Elafonissi service. Chania City Bus covers Akrotiri, Souda and the western beaches.

Interesting facts

  • The lighthouse at the harbour mouth is Venetian underneath. Its minaret-like upper stage dates from Egyptian rule in the 1830s.
  • Chania was the capital of Crete until 1971, when the seat of the island’s administration moved to Heraklion.
  • The Municipal Market opened on 4 December 1913, inaugurated by Venizelos, on a cross plan modelled on the covered market of Marseille.
  • Etz Hayyim on Kondylaki is the only synagogue still in use on Crete, revived in 1999 after the deportation of June 1944.
