Poi Kalyan
The city's central set piece, and the one to see first. The Kalyan Minaret went up in 1127 under the Karakhanid ruler Arslan Khan, rises 45.6 metres in fourteen bands of patterned brick, and was the tallest thing in Central Asia for centuries. Genghis Khan sacked Bukhara in 1220 and spared it. Facing it are the Kalyan Mosque and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa of the 1530s.
