Time the day around Saltstraumen. The current turns roughly every six hours and the hours either side of maximum flow are the whole show, so read a tide table before anything else. Then give the Norwegian Aviation Museum half a day, drive the Kjerringøy road north for the trading post and the red sand at Mjelle, and keep an evening free: from Keiservarden the view carries to Lofoten.
Bodø was bombed flat in May 1940, rebuilt in plain post-war concrete, and spent decades being the place people changed transport for Lofoten. That reading is out of date. It held European Capital of Culture in 2024, the first city north of the Arctic Circle to do so, and the strongest tidal current on earth runs half an hour down the road.
Around 400 million cubic metres of water force through a strait 3 km long and 150 m wide every six hours, at up to 20 knots, throwing whirlpools several metres across. It is at its loudest either side of the turn, so read the tide table first, then watch from the bridge or the shoreline path below it.
Norway's national aviation museum and the largest in the Nordics, laid out as a propeller with a real control tower at the hub. The collection runs from a Tiger Moth to a Spitfire, a Starfighter and a U-2. The civil aviation hall is the half most visitors skip, and it explains why a country this shape flies the way it does.
Fifteen preserved buildings of a nineteenth-century Nordland merchant estate, about 40 km north of Bodø with the Festvåg to Misten ferry in the middle. The main season runs from May; outside it the café opens on Saturdays. Knut Hamsun's novels were filmed here, which is why the interiors look staged and are not.
A 366 m plateau named for Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the walk about 100,000 people a year do. Sherpa-built steps climb from the Rønvikfjellet car park, roughly 2.5 km to the cairn, at a grade that suits most people. On a clear evening the view runs the length of Vestfjorden to the Lofoten wall.
The current read from water level instead of from the bridge, in a rigid inflatable, with white-tailed eagles along the shore on the way out. Flotation suits and goggles come with the ticket. Minimum age is six, and it is not a trip for anyone with a bad back or neck.
Built around Anna Karoline, the only preserved original Nordland jekt. The jekt was the cargo boat that carried stockfish south to Bergen for centuries, and standing under the hull is the point of the visit. It was named Norwegian museum of the year for 2024.
Twenty kilometres up the Kjerringøy road, three more down a side road marked Mjelle and Mulstrand, then about half an hour on foot over the ridge. The sand is half white and half deep red, coloured by garnet eroded out of the rock behind it. No kiosk and no shelter, which is most of the appeal.
An earthwork fort on the point across the harbour, built in 1810 to keep British warships off the town's grain stores and closed again in 1835. It is one of only two forts ever raised in northern Norway, and volunteers rebuilt it from the original drawings using 2,000 tonnes of stone.
Consecrated in 1956 and the clearest statement of what the town did after the bombing: a long basilica in concrete by Blakstad and Munthe-Kaas, with a free-standing bell tower and a 12 m stained glass window. It reads austere from the street and stops reading that way once you are inside.
Bodø/Glimt play here on an 8,270-capacity ground with an artificial pitch and undersoil heating, which is what this latitude requires. In April 2025 they knocked out Lazio and became the first Norwegian club to reach a European semi-final. Tickets go through the club, and through the booths on match days.

Bodø is the northern end of Norway's rail network. Trains from Trondheim take about ten hours over 729 km. Check SJ for the current night-train service before you plan around it.
Torghatten runs the car ferry to Moskenes, about three and a quarter hours across Vestfjorden. Free on foot, booked ahead with a car, and passengers register before boarding.
Reis Nordland runs the county network, zone-priced, with tickets bought and activated in the Reis app before boarding. Paying on board costs more.
