Three days. One for the frankincense sites: Al Baleed and its Museum of the Frankincense Land inside the city, then Sumhuram above Khor Rori, 40 km east. One for the coast west of town, where the sea fires through blowholes in the cliff at Al Mughsayl. One for the mountains behind it: Wadi Darbat, Job's Tomb and the Jebel Samhan escarpment.
Salalah sits on a coastal plain in Dhofar, about 1,000 km south of Muscat and nearer the Yemeni border than any other Omani city. It is the one corner of Arabia the Indian Ocean monsoon reaches, and the frankincense trade that made it rich left four UNESCO sites within an hour of the centre.
The medieval port of Zafar, which shipped frankincense and Arabian horses from the 8th century to the 16th, spread along a lagoon you cross on foot or by electric buggy. The Museum of the Frankincense Land at the gate is the one place that explains the trade before you go looking for what is left of it.
The escarpment valley 40 km east of the city, where monsoon runoff pours over the limestone rim and pools into a lake below. From late June to September it is the busiest sight in Dhofar. Outside the season the falls stop and it is a quiet drive with camels standing in the road.
Six kilometres of sand 40 km west of the city, and at its far end a limestone shelf where the sea is forced up through vents in the rock. They fire hardest on a big swell. Marneef Cave shelters the walkway above them, and the cliff road beyond climbs in switchbacks toward the Yemeni border.
The walled port the Hadramawt kingdom built above a creek to ship frankincense, occupied from roughly the 3rd century BC. The ruins sit on a bluff over the khor, which draws waders and wintering birds. The site museum handles the inscriptions and the routes the cargo took.
The frankincense market beside the Sultan's palace: covered walkways of family shops selling resin by grade, translucent green hojari from the first cuts at the top, silver below it. Sellers burn a sample so you can compare. It runs split hours, morning and again from late afternoon.
A small white-domed shrine on the mountain above the city, held by Muslims, Christians and Jews to be the grave of the prophet Job. The climb through Jabal Ittin is half the reason to go: the plain and the sea open out behind you at every switchback.
A 19th-century sheikh's house in the fishing town 35 km east, restored room by room: the majlis, the date store, the roof with its cannon. It is the clearest picture in Dhofar of how a coastal family actually lived.
The old trading port 75 km east, with a castle above the harbour and, on the way in, the twin-domed tomb of Muhammad bin Ali, a scholar who died in 1161. The reef offshore is the best diving on this coast.
The escarpment above Mirbat, rising to about 2,100 m, with a viewpoint where the cliff drops clean to the plain. The 4,500 sq km reserve below it is one of the last refuges of the Arabian leopard, which you will not see. The drive is the point.
The UNESCO grove 40 km north of the city, on the desert side of the mountains, where Boswellia sacra grows wild across the gravel. A guide will score a trunk to show the resin bleed white before it hardens into the stuff sold in the souq.

Oman's second international airport, about 13 km northeast of the centre. Muscat is the dominant route with roughly 53 departures a week, alongside Gulf carriers and seasonal charters.
The national operator runs Muscat to Salalah twice a day, about twelve hours over 1,016 km of highway. Book ahead for khareef, when the coaches sell out.
Oman has no passenger railway and no useful bus between the sights, which run 180 km along the coast. A saloon car reaches everything except the Fazayah track and the Jebel Samhan approach.
