Montevideo rewards a slow three days. Walk Ciudad Vieja in the morning, take lunch at a Mercado del Puerto grill, and spend the late afternoon on the Rambla with the rest of the city. Add Estadio Centenario for the football, the Sunday feria on Tristán Narvaja for the browsing, and one day out west to Colonia or east to the wine country of Canelones.
Uruguay’s capital holds nearly two in five Uruguayans and still moves at the pace of a coastal town. The colonial grid of Ciudad Vieja runs straight into a working port, the Rambla curves for roughly 22 kilometres along the Río de la Plata, and almost every plan here ends the same way: beef over coals, a thermos of mate, and a view of the water.
The iron market hall opened in 1868 and is now a room full of parrillas, each one built around an open wood fire. The ritual is fixed: pick a counter, order a mixed grill and a medio y medio, and watch the coals do the work. It runs on lunch rather than dinner, and weekends fill early.
The Rambla runs roughly 22 kilometres along the Río de la Plata and works as the city’s main public space. The Pocitos curve is where Montevideo gathers: runners, fishermen and whole families passing a gourd of mate. Sunset is the hour that matters. The water turns saltier and clearer the further east you walk.
Uruguay’s national theatre opened in 1856 and still programmes opera, ballet, concerts and the Comedia Nacional. Guided tours take in the halls and the working parts of the building, and cost a fraction of a ticket. If the programme suits, go to a performance instead: the room is the point.
Built for the first World Cup and opened on 18 July 1930, the Centenario hosted the final that Uruguay won 4-2 against Argentina. FIFA lists it as a historical monument of world football, the only one it recognises. The museum under the stands is modest; walking out pitch-side is what people remember.
A private museum telling the story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which came down in the Andes in October 1972, and of the sixteen survivors rescued 72 days later. It is built from objects the families kept, and it handles the story plainly rather than dramatically. Two small floors, and an hour goes quickly.
Mario Palanti’s 1928 tower was the tallest building in South America when it opened, and it still anchors the eastern end of Plaza Independencia. Guided tours climb to the viewpoint and take in the tango museum inside; the rest of the building is flats and offices, so the tour is the only way up.
A produce market has spread up Tristán Narvaja and into the side streets every Sunday since 1909, and it now sells antiques, books, records, tools and livestock alongside the fruit. Come to browse rather than to buy anything in particular, and keep a hand on your bag in the crush.
The 1910s market hall reopened in 2013 with butchers, greengrocers and specialist food stalls under the original ironwork, plus restaurants and cafés around the edges. This is where the city shops rather than where tour groups stop, and it pairs well with the Palacio Legislativo a few blocks away.
Uruguay’s parliament was finished in 1925 for the centenary of independence and is lined throughout in Uruguayan marble, most spectacularly in the Salón de los Pasos Perdidos. Guided tours run on weekdays in Spanish, English and Portuguese, and they are the only way past the door.
The hill across the bay rises 134 metres and gave the city its name. The fortress on top has been a national monument since 1931 and has housed a military museum created by law in 1916 and opened in 1939, but the reason to cross the water is the view back: the port, the bay and the whole Ciudad Vieja skyline in one frame.
