Quick answer

Give the first day to the Hip Strip and Doctor's Cave Beach, then walk downtown to Sam Sharpe Square, where the courthouse that tried him in 1832 is now a museum. Day two goes east to Rose Hall and Greenwood, the two great houses worth the drive. Keep a third for Falmouth: bamboo rafts on the Martha Brae by day, the Luminous Lagoon after dark.

Montego Bay is where Jamaica's tourist trade started. A bathing club opened on a small cove in 1906, an English osteopath wrote about the water, and the arrivals have not stopped since. The city runs on them now, but the history downtown is the island's own.

The 10 best things to do in Montego Bay

1

Doctor's Cave Beach Club

Beach· Jimmy Cliff Boulevard (Gloucester Avenue), Montego Bay

The beach that built the city. A sanatorium owner opened his cove to friends in the 1880s and gave the property away in 1906, and the English osteopath Sir Herbert Barker then wrote about the water's healing properties. The water is still the calmest on the strip.

Best atBefore 11:00
TipOpen 08:30 to 17:30 daily. Cornwall Beach next door costs less and snorkels better.
2

Sam Sharpe Square and the Montego Bay Cultural Centre

Museum· Sam Sharpe Square, downtown Montego Bay

Sharpe led the 1831 rebellion that hastened emancipation, was tried in the 1803 courthouse on this square in April 1832 and hanged in the market place the following month. The square took his name in 1976. The courthouse now holds National Gallery West and National Museum West.

Time2 hours
CostThe square is free
Best atWeekday mornings
TipThe Cage, the 1806 lock-up rebuilt in stone around 1822, stands on the same square.
3

Rose Hall Great House

Great house· Rose Hall, about 15 km east of Montego Bay

A Georgian mansion built in the 1770s by John Palmer, restored, and sold hard on the legend of Annie Palmer, the White Witch said to have murdered three husbands. Treat the ghost story as theatre and the house as the best-preserved plantation interior on this coast.

Time90 minutes

Best atLate afternoon
TipDay tours run Monday to Saturday, 09:15 to 16:00. Night tours are Wednesday to Saturday.
4

Montego Bay Marine Park

Marine park· From Bogue Lagoon east to Rum Bottle Bay, Montego Bay

Declared on 8 June 1992, this was the first marine park in Jamaica. It protects the reef, the mangroves and two fish sanctuaries along the city's whole waterfront, which is why the snorkelling starts a short swim off the public beaches rather than an hour out.

TimeHalf a day
CostFree from the shore
Best atMorning
TipReef-safe sunscreen only, and do not stand on coral. The park is patrolled.
5

Rafting on the Martha Brae

River· Rafters Village, Martha Brae, Trelawny, near Falmouth

Three miles of river on a 30-foot bamboo raft, poled by a licensed captain who names the trees as you pass them. It takes about an hour and a quarter, it has run since 1970, and it is the one thing here that is genuinely unhurried.

TimeHalf a day with the drive
CostTicketed per raft
Best atMid-morning
TipAbout 40 minutes east of the city. Tip the captain in cash at the landing.
6

Greenwood Great House

Great house· Greenwood, about 20 km east of Montego Bay

Built in the 1780s by Richard Barrett, cousin of the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and one of the few plantation houses left standing through the 1831 rebellion. The tour runs about 45 minutes and the guide plays the instruments, which is the point of coming.

Time1 hour
CostTicketed at the door
Best atAny time it is open
TipPair it with Rose Hall: the two houses are ten minutes apart on the same road east.
7

Rocklands Bird Sanctuary

Wildlife· Anchovy, about 8 km inland from Montego Bay

Lisa Salmon founded this feeding station in 1958 and trained the birds to come to the hand. Red-billed streamertails, Jamaica's national bird, still feed from a bottle held on the patio. Hurricane Melissa hit it hard in 2025 and it reopened with reduced facilities.

Time1 hour
CostTicketed at the gate
Best atMid-afternoon
TipCall ahead: the rebuild is ongoing and opening times move with it.
8

Luminous Lagoon at Glistening Waters

Lagoon· Glistening Waters, Rock, Falmouth, Trelawny

Fresh water off the Martha Brae meets the sea here and feeds dinoflagellates that flash blue when the water is disturbed. Boats go out after dark and the crew will let you swim, which is the only way to see it properly. The lagoon is about five feet deep.

TimeAn evening
CostTicketed per boat tour
Best atAfter nightfall
TipBring a swimsuit and a towel. A bright moon washes the glow out.
9

Cinnamon Hill Golf Course

Golf· Rose Hall Estate, about 15 km east of Montego Bay

Eighteen holes, par 72, laid out in 1969 by Robert von Hagge and Rick Baril across an old sugar estate. You play past aqueducts and mill ruins, and the waterfall on the 15th appeared in Live and Let Die. The White Witch course shares the estate.

TimeHalf a day
CostGreen fees by season
Best atEarly tee times
TipBook both courses through Rose Hall Golf rather than at the hotel desk.
10

Burchell Memorial Baptist Church

Church· King Street, downtown Montego Bay

Thomas Burchell founded the congregation in 1824 and Sam Sharpe was a deacon and preacher in it. The first building was destroyed in the rebellion; the present one dates to 1835. Sharpe's remains were moved from the harbour sands to the vault here.

Montego Bay travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Montego Bay?+
Four. One for the Hip Strip and Doctor's Cave, one for downtown and Sam Sharpe Square, one for the two great houses on the road east, and one in Falmouth for the raft trip and the Luminous Lagoon after dark.
When is the best time to visit Montego Bay?+
December to March. That is the driest and most settled stretch, with January the driest month of all. September and October are the wettest, and they fall inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November.
Is Montego Bay open after Hurricane Melissa?+
Yes. Melissa made landfall in Westmoreland on 28 October 2025 as the first category 5 storm to hit Jamaica. Sangster International, the cruise terminal and the main resort areas are all working again, though some venues are still rebuilding.
How do you get from the airport into Montego Bay?+
Sangster is 4.8 km east of the centre, so the Hip Strip is a short ride. JUTA and JCAL are the only private taxi firms permitted to collect passengers at arrivals. Agree the fare before you get in, since meters are not used.
Is Montego Bay a good base for the rest of Jamaica?+
For the west and the north coast, yes. Negril is about 75 minutes, Falmouth 40, and Ocho Rios an hour and a half. Kingston is three and a half to four hours by Knutsford Express coach, which makes it an overnight rather than a day out.
