Mombasa travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Mombasa?+
Three. One for Fort Jesus, the Old Town and the markets; one on the reef at the marine park or on Diani Beach; one for Haller Park, Bombolulu and Jumba la Mtwana. Add two more for Wasini Island or Shimba Hills.
When is the best time to visit Mombasa?+
December to March is hot, dry and the peak beach season. July to October is cooler and also dry. The long rains fall from about April to June, when some beach hotels close for renovation and the sea is rougher.
How do you get from Nairobi to Mombasa?+
The Madaraka Express is the easy way: a daily train from Nairobi Terminus to Mombasa Terminus at Miritini, with economy at KSh 1,500. Flights to Moi International take about an hour, and buses run overnight.
Should you stay in Mombasa or Diani?+
Stay on the island or in Nyali for the Old Town, Fort Jesus and restaurants. Choose Diani for a beach holiday with day trips into town; the Likoni ferry is the bottleneck, so allow extra time for the crossing.
What should you wear in the Old Town?+
Mombasa is a largely Muslim city, so cover shoulders and knees in the Old Town and at mosques, and keep swimwear for the beach. Ask before photographing people, and expect fewer stalls at Friday midday prayers.
