The best things to do in Maastricht are the guided cave tours under Sint-Pietersberg, the bookshop inside the Dominican church, the basilica of Saint Servatius with its treasury, and the 1298 stone bridge into Wyck. Two days covers the walled centre and the hill behind it. Come in May, June or September, book the caves before you travel, and keep a Sunday for the antiques market over the border in Tongeren.

Maastricht sits at the bottom of the Netherlands, closer to Liege and Aachen than to Amsterdam, and it behaves accordingly: Romanesque churches, a Burgundian appetite and a dialect of its own. The ten entries below run from the caves under Sint-Pietersberg through the walled centre and across the Meuse into Wyck.
Centuries of marl quarrying left a labyrinth under Mount Saint Peter, its walls carved with charcoal drawings and signs from the years it sheltered the city. You go in with a guide or not at all, and it holds around 10°C all year, so take a jacket in August.
A Dominican church of the 13th century that has sold books since 2006, the ceiling frescoes intact above a black steel bookstack you climb for the view back down the nave. Coffee is served in the old priest’s choir. Walking in costs nothing.
The Romanesque basilica stands over the grave of the city’s patron saint, and the treasury beside it holds the reliquary shrine and the silver bust still carried through the streets on pilgrimage. The cloister and the crypt are the quiet half of the visit.
The city’s big square, two churches shoulder to shoulder along one side and a wall of terraces down the other. It doubles as the stage: Andre Rieu in July, an open-air restaurant in August, the Christmas market from late November.
Limburg’s art museum, in Aldo Rossi’s building on the Meuse under a zinc cupola you can pick out from the bridge. Medieval sculpture and old masters on one floor, contemporary work above. The riverside walk to reach it is half the visit.
A Romanesque church whose westwork was built like a fortress wall, and inside it the chapel of Our Lady, Star of the Sea: a 15th-century wooden Virgin banked with candles that pilgrims still travel for. Enter from the square rather than the cloister.
The red tower beside Sint-Servaas is the one you see from everywhere, and 260 spiral steps get you to the platform on top. The stair is narrow and tight in places. What you get for it is the whole centre, the Meuse and the hills behind it.
Begun in 1229, this is the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands, and the run of first wall leading off it is walkable. Inside sits Vestingmuseum Maastricht, which explains why a Dutch city ended up with this much stone around it.
Built between 1280 and 1298 and the oldest bridge in the country, 160 metres of limestone tying the old centre to Wyck. Cross it on foot at dusk, when the lit facades on both banks land in the water and the drawbridge section is up for a barge.
Cement quarrying stopped here in 2018 and left 150 hectares of terraces, cliffs and pools, now part of a protected Natura 2000 site. A staircase of 215 steps drops into the pit. Above it there is chalk grassland and the long view down the Meuse valley.

First starred in 1957, which makes it the oldest starred address in the city. Classic French, unhurried.

The regional airport at Beek, north of the city. Arriva bus 30 runs from the terminal to Maastricht Centraal in about 25 minutes, twice an hour on weekdays.
NS intercity trains run north to Eindhoven, Utrecht and Amsterdam. Arriva works the local lines to Sittard, Heerlen, Kerkrade, Roermond and across the border to Aachen.
Arriva runs the city and regional buses. Its Euregioticket covers a day of buses and trains across the Meuse-Rhine region, Belgium and Germany included, for €23.50.
The walled centre crosses in about fifteen minutes. The Sint Servaasbrug and the Hoge Brug both carry walkers and cyclists into Wyck, and the hill is a bike ride, not a bus route.
