Quick answer

The best things to do in Langkawi are the SkyCab up Gunung Machinchang to the SkyBridge, a boat through the Kilim mangroves, a half-day island hop to Dayang Bunting and Beras Basah, an afternoon on Tanjung Rhu and sunset on Pantai Cenang. Give it three or four days. Base yourself on the west coast and hire a car or use Grab: the sights are spread out and buses are scarce.

Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands off Kedah's northwest coast, and nearly everyone stays on the largest. The west coast holds the beaches and the bars, Kuah the ferries and the duty-free shops, the north the mangroves and the quietest sand. The whole group is a UNESCO Global Geopark.

The 10 best things to do in Langkawi

1

Ride the SkyCab to the SkyBridge

Cable car· Oriental Village, Burau Bay, Langkawi

The cable car climbs about 2.2 km up Gunung Machinchang in roughly 15 minutes, to a curved 125-metre footbridge hung from a single pylon some 660 metres above the sea. The Cambrian rock under it is among the oldest in Malaysia.

Climb to the Seven Wells

Waterfall· Telaga Tujuh, Burau Bay, Langkawi

Langkawi travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Langkawi?+
Three or four. One day for the SkyCab and Seven Wells, one for the Kilim mangroves and Tanjung Rhu, one for island hopping, and the rest for the beach. A car makes it easier to fit in.
How do you get to Langkawi?+
Fly into Langkawi International Airport (LGK) from Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Singapore, or take a ferry from Kuala Perlis, about 1 hr 20 min, or Kuala Kedah, about 1 hr 45 min, to Kuah Jetty.
When is the best time to visit Langkawi?+
December to March, the dry season, with the calmest seas for boat trips. It is also the busiest and most expensive time. The wetter months are cheaper and the waterfalls run hardest.
Is Langkawi duty-free?+
Yes. Alcohol, chocolate, tobacco and cosmetics cost noticeably less than on the mainland. Kuah has the largest concentration of duty-free shops; ask about allowances before you leave the island.
Do you need a car in Langkawi?+
It helps. There is no rail and few buses, and the sights are spread across the island. Hire a car at the airport, or rely on Grab and taxis if you stay on the west coast and take tours.
