Lola ya Bonobo

Tour de l'Échangeur and the Lumumba mausoleum

Monument· Place de la Reconstruction, Limete, Kinshasa

A tower begun in 1970 as Mobutu's monument to the nation, unfinished for decades. A Lumumba statue was raised at its foot in 2002, and his remains were interred here in 2022. It reads best knowing a dictator's monument ended up holding the man he helped remove.

Texaf Bilembo

Jardin Botanique and the Jardin Zoologique

The river at Kinkole

Every visitor sees the Congo from the shore in Gombe. Kinkole, past the airport, is where you get on it: pirogues out to the sandbanks, and terraces grilling what came off the boats. Agree the pirogue price on the bank before stepping in.

How many days do you need in Kinshasa?+
Three days covers the city and four lets you add the bonobos or a trip west. Traffic, not opening hours, is the constraint: two significant stops a day is a realistic plan, three is ambitious. Group them by commune so you are not crossing the city twice, and keep the mornings for anything that involves leaving Gombe.
Is Kinshasa safe to visit?+
Kinshasa is far from the conflict in the east, and business travellers and aid workers use it daily, but it demands ordinary big-city caution taken seriously: move by arranged car after dark, keep phones out of sight, and never photograph soldiers, police or government buildings. Read your foreign ministry advice before booking.
Do you need a visa for DR Congo?+
Yes. Almost every visitor needs one arranged before arrival, through an embassy or the portal at evisa.gouv.cd, plus a yellow fever certificate at immigration. Apply well ahead: processing takes days, and an invitation or hotel booking is normally part of the file.
When is the best time to visit Kinshasa?+
June to September, the dry season, when the rain stops and the humidity drops. October to May is wet, heaviest around November and again in March and April. It is hot all year, so the difference is rain rather than temperature.
Can you cross from Kinshasa to Brazzaville?+
Yes, by ferry from the Beach Ngobila, and it is the only way, because the two capitals face each other with no bridge between them. Brazzaville is a different country, so you need a Republic of the Congo visa in advance and a multiple-entry DRC visa to come back. Budget a full day.

The main gateway, 23 kilometres east of Gombe and about an hour in normal traffic. No rail link, no airport bus, no metered rank, so arrange a pickup through your hotel before you fly.

Shared taxis marked TC and minibuses work like buses: fixed routes, a flat fare, picked up along the way. Cheap and how the city travels, but it needs French or Lingala and no luggage.

The state bus company, running trunk routes since 2013. Fares are fixed and low and the seats are the most comfortable in Kinshasa transport, but coverage is thin against the size of the city.
