Quick answer

Khujand is the Ferghana valley's Tajik gateway and an easy two days. Start at Panjshanbe Bazaar and the Sheikh Muslihiddin complex across the square, then walk to the fortress and the Sughd history museum. Ride the cable car over the Syr Darya to Somoni Park for the evening. On day two see Arbob Palace and swim in the Tajik Sea, or drive to Istaravshan.

Tajikistan's second city sits on the Syr Darya where the Ferghana valley opens, and it is older than almost anywhere in Central Asia: Alexander took it in 329 BC and called it Alexandria Eschate, the furthest. Leninabad for most of the Soviet era, it is now the capital of Sughd and the north's market town.

Khujand travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Khujand?+
Two. One for the old town: Panjshanbe Bazaar, the Sheikh Muslihiddin complex, the fortress and the Sughd museum, then the cable car to Somoni Park. One for Arbob Palace and the Tajik Sea, or for Istaravshan.
When is the best time to visit Khujand?+
April and May, or September and October. July and August regularly pass 35°C with almost no rain, which is fine for the Tajik Sea but hard for walking the city at midday.
How do you get from Dushanbe to Khujand?+
Fly with Somon Air in about an hour, or take a shared taxi over the Anzob tunnel on the M34, roughly five to six hours. The road is scenic and crosses high passes, so allow for weather in winter.
Can you cross from Tashkent to Khujand?+
Yes, at the Oybek and Fotehobod crossing, open 24 hours. Take a taxi from Tashkent to the border, walk across, and pick up a shared taxi on the Tajik side. Allow about four hours in all, longer if the taxi waits to fill.
Is Khujand expensive?+
No. A bazaar lunch costs very little, taxis are cheap and museum tickets are a few dollars. Carry somoni in cash for the bazaar, taxis and ticket desks.
