Climb Matanga Hill before breakfast on day two, walk the colonnaded bazaar to Virupaksha, and cross the river by coracle to Anegundi in the afternoon. Hire a bicycle or a scooter: the monuments are spread thin.

Hampi is the wreck of Vijayanagara, a capital founded in 1336 and sacked after the Battle of Talikota in 1565, never rebuilt. What is left stands in 4,187 hectares of granite boulders on the Tungabhadra, inscribed by UNESCO in 1986. The village at its centre holds fewer than 3,000 people.

See the stone chariot at the Vittala temple

The fifteenth-century Vittala complex is the high point of Vijayanagara stonework, and its Garuda shrine, cut as a chariot drawn by two elephants, is the motif on the reverse of the Indian fifty rupee note. The hall in front of it carries the tuned colonnades known as the musical pillars, now roped off from touch.

Walk into the Virupaksha temple, the one still in worship

Cut from one boulder in 1528 under Krishnadevaraya, 6.7 metres tall, seated on the coils of a seven-headed serpent. The consort who sat on its knee was broken away along with both arms, and the damage is the point. A three-metre linga stands in water in the cell next door.

Walk the colonnaded bazaar to the Virupaksha gopura

Virupaksha Bazaar runs more than a kilometre from the foot of Matanga Hill to the temple gate, a double colonnade built for shops, pilgrims and a chariot festival. The stalls and huts that filled it were cleared in 2011, so the street reads as architecture again, gopura closing the view.

The round basket boats have carried people over this river for centuries and still do it in minutes. On the far bank sit Anegundi, older than Hampi itself, and the steps up Anjanadri Hill. The crossing stops whenever upstream dam releases lift the water, and the road detour runs about 25 km.

Two full days covers the sacred centre, the royal centre and one crossing to Anegundi. Three buys Daroji, Sanapur Lake or a morning on the boulders. Day trippers from Hosapete see the chariot and the gopura and miss the part that makes the journey worth it.
When is the best time to visit Hampi?+
November to February. The ruins carry almost no shade and summer highs on this plateau run past 40C, which makes April and May punishing. The monsoon cools it but lifts the river, and that can shut the coracle crossing for days at a time.
How do you get to Hampi?+
Hosapete Junction, 13 km away, is the railhead, with overnight trains from Bengaluru, Hubballi and Hyderabad. Hubballi (HBX) is the nearest useful airport at about 145 km. Buses run from Hosapete to Kamalapura and the bazaar through the day.
Do you need a ticket for the monuments in Hampi?+
One Archaeological Survey of India ticket covers the Vittala temple and the royal enclosure group, the Lotus Mahal and the elephant stables included, on the same day. Most of the rest, Virupaksha among it, is free to walk into. The museum charges separately.
Should you stay in Hampi Bazaar or on Hippie Island?+
Hampi Bazaar puts you inside the monuments and next to the temple, which is what most people want. Virupapur Gaddi across the river is quieter and cheaper, with the catch that you depend on the boat: when the water is high, getting back is a 25 km road trip.
