Two days is right for Győr. Day one is the old town on foot: Chapter Hill and the basilica with its two relics, Széchenyi tér and the baroque houses around it, the Ark of the Covenant, then Dunakapu tér and the river. Day two splits between the museums, which the Rómer Flóris runs across eleven venues, and the thermal water at Rába Quelle. Add a half day for Pannonhalma, the Benedictine archabbey twenty kilometres south.
Győr sits where the Rába and the Rábca run into the Mosoni-Danube, halfway between Budapest and Vienna, and most itineraries drive straight past it. That is the opportunity. The city rebuilt in baroque after the Ottomans left in 1598, and what stands today is the third richest stock of protected monuments in Hungary, after Budapest and Sopron.
The seat of the Győr diocese, on the cobbled hill where the Rába and the Rábca meet the Mosoni-Danube. Two relics carry it: the gilded silver herm of Saint Ladislaus, which holds the king's skull, and the Weeping Madonna, an Irish painting that shed tears of blood on 17 March 1697.
The baroque main square, and the centre of the city's public life for centuries: markets, proclamations, trials. What to read here is the corner balconies, the closed oriel windows that are Győr's architectural signature. The Apátúr-ház on the south side holds the city museum.
A gilded bronze lamb on a seven-sealed book, carried on the Ark by two angels. Charles III paid for it in 1731 after his soldiers broke up a Corpus Christi procession on this spot, which makes the finest baroque monument in the city an apology.
Founded in 1859 at the urging of Flóris Rómer, a Benedictine from the city, and now spread over eleven venues in the old town. The Esterházy Palace is the flagship, a baroque town palace in museum use since 1949, holding the Radnai collection and the temporary shows.
The city's thermal water, on the Sziget side where the Rába meets the Mosoni-Danube. Medicinal pools, an adventure section and outdoor water, ten minutes on foot from Széchenyi tér, which is what separates it from the spa towns you have to drive to.
The river square, open to the Mosoni-Danube along its north side and the busiest of the three. The iron rooster is the city's emblem and its founding story: the Ottomans mounted one here in 1594 and swore Győr would be Christian again when it crowed.
Named for the medieval gate onto the Vienna road, and the handsomest of the three squares: the Carmelite church on one side, the Rába on the other, the old bastions behind. It is also where the city's specialty coffee ended up.
The regional history collection, in the baroque Abbot's House on Széchenyi tér. It runs the county's story forward from Arrabona, and the building earns the ticket on its own: it is the best-kept palace front on the square.
Built in 1870 on an octagonal plan for the Neolog community of Újváros, and restored to hold the Vasilescu collection of twentieth-century Hungarian art, open since the summer of 2006. Five denominations still keep churches on this one street.
A wooded island in the two arms of the Rába, one bridge from the old town and named for Kálmán Radó of the Rába Regulation Society. It is the city's promenade: benches, shade and open-air events through the summer.

The other option, with a direct bus to Győr bus station twice a day taking around two hours. By rail, cross into Budapest and take the Vienna line west for just over an hour.
Győr is on the Budapest to Vienna main line, so the fast Railjet services stop here: about 1h 05m from Budapest, about 1h 20m from Vienna, hourly in both directions.
