Start in the heritage core: the Basilica del Santo Niño, Magellan’s Cross on the plaza beside it, Fort San Pedro on the waterfront, and the ancestral houses at Casa Gorordo and Yap-Sandiego. Give an afternoon to the Busay ridge for the Temple of Leah and the Taoist Temple, and eat lechon at least twice. The islands, the falls and the whale sharks are day trips.
Cebu City is where Spain landed in 1565, and it still keeps the country’s oldest church, its oldest fort and its most copied roast pig. It is also the second airport hub, which makes it the practical base for the whole central Visayas.
The country’s oldest Catholic church holds the Santo Niño image Magellan’s party gave to Rajah Humabon’s wife in 1521, and the queue in the pilgrim centre runs all day. Come before the mid-morning masses, or in January when Sinulog turns the whole block into a procession.
A painted kiosk across the plaza from the basilica shelters a tindalo-wood cross said to encase the one Magellan’s expedition planted in 1521. It takes five minutes, and the ceiling mural is the reason to look up on the way out.
The oldest and smallest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines, begun under Legazpi and rebuilt in coral stone. The ramparts are the point: a slow circuit above the walls with the pier on one side and Plaza Independencia’s rain trees on the other.

The provincial museum occupies the old Cebu provincial jail, and the cell blocks are now galleries running from pre-colonial trade finds to the Japanese occupation. Four blocks north of Plaza Independencia, and the quietest of the heritage stops.
A Roman-styled mausoleum a widower built for his wife, half museum and half theatre set, on the ridge road above the city. The view down over Cebu and Mactan is why people climb; the marble lions and the grand staircase are why they stay.
The Chinese-Cebuano community’s temple climbs a gated hillside in Beverly Hills, dragon balustrades and red-tile roofs stacked up to a terrace over the whole city. Entry is free and worshippers use it daily, so keep to the marked areas.
A walled circular deck at the top of the Busay road, and still the cleanest view of Metro Cebu: the port, the two bridges and Mactan laid out below. Go for sunset, stay for the lights, then eat at one of the ridge kitchens on the way down.
The city’s oldest and largest public market, running on produce, flowers and fish since the days of the railway coal yard it is named after. It is mid-redevelopment, so stalls move: go early, carry small notes, and keep a hand on your bag.
